Chicago Cubs Lineup — Oh, That’s Fun and Smart: Ballesteros Behind the Plate

CUBS LINEUP — The 2025 Chicago Cubs did not win their division, but they did the next best thing: locking up the top Wild Card seed, ensuring three home games in the first round, before the final day of the season. Now, they can take this one easy, and prepare physically and mentally for the Padres.

In the meantime, here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the finale game of the 2025 regular season. Go Cubs.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Kyle Tucker, DH Seiya Suzuki, RF Moises Ballesteros, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Willi Castro, 3B

With just two exceptions, the Cubs lineup is full of regulars this afternoon, which is a good idea (just stay locked in, you’ve got an off-day tomorrow anyway).

One exception includes Willi Castro at third in place of Matt Shaw. Shrug. I don’t suspect we’ll see Castro in any of the starting lineups this week, but he could factor in one way or another. So it’s good to get him some work. The other is Moises Ballesteros behind the plate!

I STRONGLY doubt he’ll catch in the postseason, but his bat will be involved one way or another. And since you don’t want to sit a suddenly surging Seiya Suzuki or Kyle Tucker (who needs as many reps as he can get), catcher was the only way to keep Ballesteros fresh. I love it. Especially because it allowed both of the Cubs actual catchers to get an extra day of rest. Smart, smart.

All right, Cubs. Go win one more. 92 wins are better than 91.

    St. Louis Cardinals Lineup:

Jose Fermin, 2B Ivan Herrera, DH Nolan Gorman, 3B Thomas Saggese, SS Jordan Walker, RF Jimmy Crooks, C Yohel Pozo, 1B Victor Scott II, CF Nathan Church, LF

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP

The Cubs will wind up getting just seven starts (and eight games) out of Javier Assad this regular season, which is a lot less than we had hoped for at the start of the year. But he did cover some key innings down the stretch when the rotation needed it and the team was still seeking a playoff berth. So I guess something is better than nothing.

As an aside, Assad is still under team control for three more years after this one (arbitration eligible this winter), so he’s got plenty of Cubs life ahead of him. Finish strong. We’ll see you in the playoffs.

St. Louis Cardinals: Kyle Leahy, RHP

Kyle Leahy has been a reliever throughout his three-year big-league career, but the Cardinals are giving him a chance to start today in what appears to be more than just an “opener” opportunity.

Indeed, it seems like he is pre-auditioning for a rotation spot next season.

Matthew Liberatore’s season is over. He will not start this weekend. The Cardinals hope to give Kyle Leahy the start Sunday so he has the opportunity before competing for that role in 2026.Brendan Donovan also not likely to play this weekend … t.co/BhNDcn8pzy
