It’s Media Day Eve for the Chicago Bulls!

The season will unofficially begin on Monday afternoon when players, coaches, and executives alike reconvene at the Advocate Center for the annual Media Day. After fielding many questions and taking even more photos, the Chicago Bulls will rest up before the first day of training camp on Tuesday. In many ways, a lot will feel similar to last season. Thirteen of the 15 roster spots are held by players who finished the 2024-25 campaign in Chicago. The only new faces to the full-time roster are rookie Noa Essengue and Isaac Okoro, who was acquired from the Cavaliers in a one-for-one swap trade for Lonzo Ball. Nevertheless, there will be no shortage of storylines to follow over the next couple of weeks. The first question that should be asked of the AKME regime: What do you hope to accomplish this season, and how does that tie into your larger goals? If the front office simply declares the postseason as a priority and leaves it at that, fans should be frustrated. Instead, we need to hear this brain trust put a much greater emphasis on player development and roster reconstruction. Only seven players on this team are under contract past this season. They have to bluntly acknowledge that the organization remains in a transitional phase and that there is still a ton of work to be done. They can’t go into every season pretending that the roster they have created is good enough to contend. The next big question I have is for both Karnisovas and Billy Donovan: What’s the plan for Noa Essengue? Will the Bulls handle him similarly to how they handled Matas Buzelis last season, slowly increasing his playing time as the year goes on? Do they see him as a much more raw prospect, and thus will have him spend the majority of the year with the G League? I’m sure that how he performs in training camp will have an impact on their plan, but they still must have a preferred course of action lined up already. Also, how they choose to handle this ties directly into that first question. If Essengue is getting some minutes, player development is clearly the top priority. If he’s riding the bench, another Play-In run might be on the Bulls’ minds. Who starts at small forward? While I doubt we will get a firm answer tomorrow, the question has to be thrown to Billy Donovan. There is an obvious hole in the starting lineup right now, and who the team picks could say a lot about the type of identity they hope to establish this season. Will it be the defensive-minded Isaac Okoro? The sharpshooting Kevin Huerter? A fast Ayo Dosunmu? What about a three-guard lineup with a high-IQ Tre Jones? At the end of the day, this will be the only real training camp battle to watch throughout the preseason. What are the expectations for Matas Buzelis? Does the front office temper things, or do they rave about him as if he’s the future of the franchise? Will Buzelis himself come in speaking like the next “face of the franchise?” To be honest, I do hope that Donovan and Karnisovas alike don’t rave about the forward too much. The last thing this franchise needs to do is put too much weight on the shoulders of a 20-year-old. To be clear, fans should be very excited about Year 2, and we should expect him to have a much larger workload on the offensive end. But development isn’t always linear! While Buzelis projects to be a very important piece for this organization moving forward, he shouldn’t be tasked with lifting this team out of the mud this season. Matas Buzelis of the Chicago Bulls – © Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images I have little doubt that someone will ask about the impending unrestricted free agencies of Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Correspondingly, I anticipate a deflection from both players and the front offices. Both players will say they’re focused on the season, while Karnisovas would never outright say he plans to test the trade market for either. However, do not be surprised if rumors pop up early on this season. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rockets have already come calling! Could the Guard-Needy Rockets Call the Bulls About a Trade? Bulls Legend Alize Johnson is back in the NBA … for now. The forward has reached a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves after spending the past few seasons overseas, per Shams Charania. Add another name to the injury list! The Grizzlies will begin the year without Brandon Clarke, as the big man underwent a procedure in his knee that will have to be re-evaluated in six weeks, per ESPN. He joins Fred VanVleet, Tyler Herro, and Jared McCain as some of the key rotational players who recently learned they will miss the start of the season. GET THE GOAT BACK TO WRIGLEY!
