ALISO VIEJO — Aliso Niguel’s football team outlasted El Toro in a high-scoring win, 48-35, Saturday in a nonleague game at Aliso Niguel High.
The game was originally scheduled to take place in Week 1, but was rescheduled due to a “personnel matter” involving a Capistrano Unified School District employee.
Aliso Niguel (4-1) clicked on offense throughout the game. The Wolverines scored on each of their first four possessions of the game and had 444 yards of total offense.
Wolverines quarterback Carter Vestermark completed 17 of 24 passes for 275 yards with three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. It was his third game of the season with at least four total touchdowns.
“The offensive line gave me all the time in the world,” Vestermark said. “The whole team played great.”
Aliso Niguel’s defense gave up its fair share of yardage to El Toro (2-3) but forced key turnovers to stifle potential scoring drives. Carson Etnire had two interceptions for the Wolverines and recovered a fumble.
“The offense makes it easy when they put up nearly 50. It allows the defense to play comfortably,” Etnire said. “We all executed well.”

“El Toro was playing really well stopping the run game and we saw a little bit of an avenue and we relied on a sophomore running back (Williams) and a pieced together offensive line,” Mitchell said. “They did an outstanding job.”
Etnire got his second interception of the game on the next possession to give the Wolverines the ball with 2:51 left in the game.
Makya Chee paced El Toro’s offense with 163 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns. Wyatt Nucci threw for 212 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions and 62 yards rushing.

Aliso Niguel has been playing without head coach Michael Calahan the past four games who has been away from the team due to a personal matter. Mitchell, defensive coordinator Tony Tantiyawut and former Dana Hills head coach Phil Skinner have been running the team in Calahan’s absence.
“Words can’t describe how proud we are to be in the situation that we are in with everything the team has gone through,” Mitchell said. “The kids get to see the reward for all the hard work they have put in while fighting through some irregular things.”
Calahan is expected to be back on the sidelines on Friday, Oct. 3, when Aliso Niguel opens Foxtrot League play against Dana Hills.
El Toro opens Iota League play Friday, Oct. 3, at home against Canyon.
Chee ran for a school-record 383 yards with four touchdowns last season when El Toro beat Canyon 63-35.
