Older woman can only shower ...Middle East

TribToday - News

DEAR HELOISE: More than anything, I’d love to be able to sit and soak in a warm tub of bubbles to ease my aching bones. However, I am 81 years old and cannot get out of the tub, and I can’t afford a walk-in shower. I have tried to bathe a few times, only to acknowledge my stupidity and yell at Alexa to please call somebody to help me out. Sometimes people shower just because they have to.

DEAR HELOISE: I taught English for 10 years — 5 in high school and 5 in college. I directed the freshman composition program. My takeaway is that students who don’t read regularly, especially for pleasure, will struggle to write coherently.

DEAR HELOISE: Stop expecting schools to do everything! If your children or grandchildren don’t know geography, can’t read cursive, don’t know how to make change, or can’t read a map, teach them! We adults sometimes forget that teenagers have only been in the world for less than 20 years, and there’s a tremendous amount of stuff to learn.

How I wish someone had taught me how to make change when I was a teenager 60 years ago! I was stuck behind a cash register trying to do subtraction in my head, while the customers got impatient and made derogatory comments.

Nancy, I agree with you. An education actually begins at home. I hear from teachers all the time, and many are frustrated that parents don’t teach their children how to tell time, write their names, read a few basic words, and table manners before they enter kindergarten. Parenting isn’t easy; it’s often tiring and filled with responsibilities of nurturing and teaching a child so many life lessons.

    — Heloise

DEAR HELOISE: For those who like to clean their sponges, microwaving a sponge is the best way to sterilize it. Make sure that the sponge doesn’t have a metal side — only sponge. Soak it so that it’s thoroughly wet and microwave it on high for about 2 minutes.

Make sure to leave it in the microwave for up to 10 minutes, as the sponge may be too hot to take out and use again. Do this at least once a week until the sponge is worn out, then get a new sponge out to use. This method will make your sponge like new!
