‘I’m astounded’ – Premier League legend shocked by red card decision in Manchester United vs Brentford

Manchester United lost again away at Brentford, but one key decision against them was universally panned.

Things went from bad to worse for Ruben Amorim with a 3-1 defeat at the Gtech Stadium where they could barely handle two-goal striker Igor Thiago.

However, at the other end of the pitch Nathan Collins similarly couldn’t keep a hold of Bryan Mbuemo and paid the price – albeit with 50 per cent off.

The Irish defender conceded a penalty when he hauled down Mbeumo, who was lining up to shoot with a great chance to make the score 2-2.

Yet talkSPORT’s Stuart Pearce thought Collins should’ve had twice the punishment with a red card.

“I’m astounded,” the England legend said when a yellow card was brought out.

“The laws of the game suggest that if you deny a goalscoring opportunity [you should be sent off] and that’s exactly what he’s done.”

When it was put to Pearce that the rule states players aren’t punished with both a penalty and red card if they made an effort to play the ball, he had a comprehensive response.

“Which he didn’t,” Pearce said of Collins’ foul.

“He was the wrong side of the player and pulled him down by the shoulder. 100 per cent [a red card].”

Eventually Bruno Fernandes stepped up to the plate and missed from the spot with a meek penalty that was easily saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

PGMOL explain Man United red card decision

Speaking in the aftermath, talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham received an explanation from the refereeing body PGMOL but instantly said why it was wrong.

TNTThe VAR had a long look and decided Mbeumo wasn’t in control – but it was hard for him to be given he was being fouled[/caption]

“According to the PGMOL Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball,” he began.

“Well the reason he wasn’t in control of the ball was because Nathan Collins had fouled him so he should have been red carded.

“Yet another mistake that’s going to have to be explained.”

    Amorim speaks to talkSPORT

Amorim was also questioned about the key moment by talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface.

“You guys have the ability to decide for yourselves what it was,” the under-pressure Portuguese replied.

“The referee said to me that Bryan was not in control of the ball. We can understand why he’s not in control of the ball but you guys have the ability to decide.

Fernandes’ missed penalty made it another terrible result for UnitedGetty

“I’m more focused on what we need to improve. That is my biggest concern.”

Matterface also pointed out the huge delay in the game between the awarding of the penalty and Fernandes finally taking and missing it.

“I don’t want to focus on that in these difficult moments,” Amorim responded.

“Of course these special moments in our moment [current situation] are really, really important but I’m more focused on what we should do than that.

“You guys have the capacity to evaluate that decision and I think we have the same evaluation.

“We have to be really strong to get back again with our fans and win games. It’s always the same story, we try to create momentum, we get a big punch and we go again.”

    Changes to the PGMOL rules?

Annoyed with a perceived fumbling of the rules, Pearce suggested an alternative idea for such situations where a player could concede a penalty and receive a red card.

“It was a definite denial of a goalscoring opportunity,” he said.

“This isn’t in the rule book and I’m making my own rules up here, but if you’re not going to send him off for that you should take the penalty and if it’s scored the player stays on, if he misses then the player is sent off.”
