Rory McIlroy and the American Ryder Cup fans resumed their war early on Saturday.
McIlroy was caught flipping his middle finger at the home supporters at Bethpage Black yesterday following a day of abuse aimed at the Northern Irishman.
McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood battered Collin Morikawa and Harris English in the morning foursomes, winning 5&4.
The Masters champion then joined Shane Lowry for the afternoon fourballs but he missed a decisive putt on the 18th as they tied with Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay.
McIlroy caught flack from the New York crowds throughout the day and he was quick to get the rivalry going again on Saturday.
As he and Fleetwood were introduced to the crowd for their repeat foursomes clash against Morikawa and English, McIlroy blew a sarcastic kiss to the bleachers.
He then outstretched both arms to take a bow and the Americans were not best pleased.
They responded with chants of ‘F*** you, Rory’ which rung around Bethpage throughout Friday’s action too.
And the Americans had the last laugh too as McIlroy’s opening drive flew through the left fairway and into some deep rough, leading to a par while English made birdie to go up in their match early.
Meanwhile, McIlroy heralded a ‘great day’ for Europe yesterday, despite him making headlines for his offensive gesture towards the crowd.
He just missed what would have been a point-winning putt against Burns and Cantlay but Europe still took an overnight lead of 5½ – 2½.
“Obviously right now, I’m disappointed I didn’t hole out for a full point,” McIlroy said on the 18th green.
McIlroy appeared to make a rude gesture in the direction of the American fans“But it’s been a great day for Europe. We have come out of the gates really strong like we wanted to.
“Yeah, we should be really proud of ourselves.
“We would have absolutely taken this last night if you had told us we would be 5½ – 2½ up.
“Obviously in the moment right now, I’m disappointed I didn’t hole that for a full point but the guys have done so well, and right now, it’s just about recovering and resting up and getting ready for Saturday.”
On the crowd’s antics, he added: “It was what we sort of expected. It was rowdy and lively. They made it difficult for us.
“You know, but I felt like Shane and I, we handled that really well and dug in. Made some good swings and good putts when we needed to.”
Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston has defended McIlroy’s actions, telling talkSPORT’s Weekend Breakfast: “You’re a target.
McIlroy was brilliant on Day 1 in New YorkGetty“He’s getting heckled all day. In the practice days, he’s getting heckled all day.
“I don’t know what someone says out in the crowd. We don’t know exactly the words said, but it could have been across that line.
“Maybe he’s just had enough of it for one day.
“I think it can be really hard when you’re in that environment and you’re so close to the fans, literally touching distance.
“There’s no barrier between fans and the players to some extent.
“You can hear everything as well. So maybe he just had enough of it. And if he did, he did. I mean, it is. It’s human.
“We’ve all been there. All day for four or five days of getting peppered. It must be tough.”
