— Will Sammon (@WillSammon) December 27, 2025The name should sound at least vaguely familiar to you, as there was a time when Hunter Harvey was a significant pitching prospect with the Orioles, but who could never quite live up to the hype. That was largely an injury situation, because a whole variety of them popped up for him over the years.
He bounced around on waivers, winding up with the Nationals as a reliever in 2022, and kinda blew up:
(via FanGraphs)From there, he became a high-value trade target at the 2024 deadline, ultimately going to the Royals for a Competitive Balance Round A pick (i.e., a late first rounder) and a solid infield prospect in Cayden Wallace. I remember wanting Harvey very much at the time for the Cubs, and also thinking that the trade price was appropriately steep given his dominance as a reliever.
Buuuut then he barely pitched for the Royals, and was shut down for the year. Then, as you can see, he barely pitched in 2025, again dealing with a variety of injuries. He was once again awesome when he could pitch, but that wasn’t very often.
I’ll have much more on this Hunter Harvey signing soon, because this is a guy I really want to dig in on. The talent is immense, the peripherals are incredible, and the velocity could be a very nice addition to the bullpen mix, too. Given the long and varied injury history, though, there’s a whole lot more risk here than for a typical 31-year-old reliever signing. I love taking the big swing on upside, though.
