Two women die trying to cross the Channel in small boat

Two women have died trying to cross The Channel to Britain, French authorities have confirmed.

Around 100 people were attempting to reach the UK on a makeshift boat when the incident occured near the beaches of Neufchâtel-Hardelot, south of Calais.

A couple and their child suffering  from moderate hypothermia were taken to a hospital in Boulogne, said local official Isabelle Fradin-Thirode.

Around 60 other people are also being taken care of, she said.

Since January, a record 31,000 people have arrived in Britain by crossing the Channel in small boats.

The latest incident brings the number of recorded Channel deaths to 25 this year.

It comes shortly after the UK Government signed a new agreement with France that allows the UK to return migrants that are deemed ineligible for asylum.

In exchange, the UK will accept an equal number of people from France who are likely to have their asylum claims granted.
