Shedeur Sanders has spoken out after his father, NFL legend Deion, made a bold claim that the rookie quarterback would get an opportunity to make his official NFL debut this season.
Sanders is currently the third-string quarterback on the Cleveland Browns, where he sits behind veteran starter Joe Flacco – who has got off to a horrendous start to his 18th NFL season – and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.
Having so far not been given the opportunity to take to the field for the Browns, the former Colorado Buffaloes star, who suffered an all-time slide down to the fifth round and the 144th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, may not have to wait too much longer for his chance after all.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, one reporter asked the 23-year-old about the comments his father – and Buffs coach – made when he appeared on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce.
“So your pops just recently went on the New Heights podcast, and he said he gave you advice to stay ready and that your time is going to come, that he believes it’s going to come shortly,” the reporter said.
“What’s your reaction on that?”
Sanders’- who Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson said should be cut from the team so he can freely go somewhere he is more appreciated – response was one that showcased his maturity and willingness to learn from the position he currently finds himself in.
“I focus on each and every day, what I got to do,” he replied.
“Just because where I am on a depth chart, I don’t let that dictate my mindset each and every day, because you don’t know whatever will happen or what could happen.
“So it’s really, you know, just keeping the mindset of just staying locked in standing to everything you know, and remaining focused on the main thing.”
The advice Deion gave to his rookie son during his appearance on New Heights – where he also admitted that the Philadelphia Eagles made a call on draft night as well as the Baltimore Ravens – was to keep working hard to ensure that he is ready when the chance to take to the gridiron does arise.
“Be patient and be ready,” Deion said. “You got to be ready when it’s time.
“But when it’s time, you’re going to know. And it’s coming up. I got a prediction. I ain’t telling nobody. I got a feeling when it’s going to go down.
“But it’s going to go down this year. … He’s going to get a shot.”

However, with the decision out of his hands, and instead in those of head coach Kevin Stefanski’s, the out-of-favor rookie is focused on the tangibles that he can control and enjoying the process along the way.
“I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that,” Shedeur said.
“I don’t think playing or not playing is in my hands. Based on the situation, if things happen (and) things pan out to where I play, then I’ll be out there and I’ll be ready to play. I’m ready to play right now.
“Whatever (God’s) plan for me is, I believe in it. I don’t get stressed or feel bad that I’m in this situation that I’m in right now. I would say, it’s just funny to me, that’s it. It’s just funny to me and I enjoy it.”
