For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ava Otteson of Cathedral City, California has announced her commitment to swim and study at UCLA, starting in the fall of 2026. She trains year-round with Riverside Aquatics Association and attends Palm Desert High School.

Otteson made the announcement on Instagram, writing:

I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at UCLA! I’m incredibly grateful for God’s guidance throughout this process. Thank you so so much to all my friends, family, coaches, and teammates for their support—especially my mom and dad for always being my biggest supporters. A huge thank you to Coach Jordan and Karissa for giving me this amazing opportunity. Go Bruins!!

Otteson, a 100/200 free and 200 fly specialist, targeted the Winter Junior Championships in December as her first major meet of the 2024-25 season. Her highest finish came in the 200 fly, where she stopped the clock at 2:01.17 for a new best time and 20th overall. She also swam the 200 free, taking 47th at 1:50.95, and the 200 IM, where she notched a season-best 2:06.41 for 106th.

She wrapped up her season with her high school team at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championship in May, where she took on the 100 and 200 free. She produced a pair of season-best performances in both events, logging 51.63 in the 100 free and 1:49.94 in the 200 free. Her 200 time earned her a top-eight finish as she touched seventh, while she settled for 21st in the 100.

Otteson’s best times in the 100 and 200 free stem from the Speedo Sectional Championship in December 2023, where she hit the wall with times of 51.24 and 1:48.75. She has only broken 1:50 twice in the 200 free but has gone sub-52 seven times in the 100.

The Bruins are led by head coach Jordan Wolfrum, who enters her seventh season at the helm in 2025–26. In their first year in the Big Ten, UCLA took seventh out of 14 teams at the conference championships. The previous season, they had finished fourth at the Pac-12 Championships. They closed their year at NCAAs in Federal Way, Washington, where they placed 37th, scoring 7 points behind junior diver Eden Cheng.

The conference meet scores ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ finals. To earn a slot in the ‘C’ final at the 2025 meet, it took times of 49.60 and 1:47.11 in the 100 and 200 free, and 1:59.51 in the 200 fly. Based on her current lifetime bests, her best opportunities to score will be in the 200 free and 200 fly. She’s currently 1.64 seconds off the 200 free scoring time and 1.66 seconds shy of the 200 fly standard.

Within the team, senior Gizem Guvenc led the way in the 100 and 200 free with marks of 48.45 and 1:45.30, while senior Paige MacEachern topped the 200 fly at 1:57.77.

Otteson will join Zoie Fjare, Sara Koike, Alex Fox, Meredith O’Grady, Mia Bugarin, and Olivia Sina in UCLA’s Class of 2030.
