Darren Bailey announces second run for Illinois governor

Former Illinois Sen. Darren Bailey launched his second campaign for the governor’s office on Thursday after falling in the 2022 general election to Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

One of the highest-profile Republicans to enter the race, the farmer and former state senator announced his candidacy in a social media post, writing in part, “I’m leaving the farm to fight for you — for your family, your freedom, and the future of Illinois…”

Bailey, from downstate Xenia, was elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 2019 before clinching a state senate seat in 2020.

Bailey, who has positioned himself as an ally of President Donald Trump, gained recognition early during the COVID pandemic in 2020 after he filed a lawsuit against Pritzker following a “stay-at-home” order and highly criticized Pritzker’s role in getting the “SAFE-T Act” passed, as well as other legislation.

In the 2022 general election, Bailey was defeated by a margin of 55-to-42%, losing by more than 500,0000 votes.

He then launched a bid for the 12th Congressional District, but lost to incumbent Rep. Mike Bost, who had received the endorsement of Trump. Bailey operates his family’s farm, co-founded a private Christian school and served 17 years on the North Clay Board of Education, according to his campaign website.

During his campaign announcement on Thursday, the former state lawmaker revealed Aaron del Mar, Cook County Republican Party chairman, would be his running mate. Del Mar, who became the youngest-ever councilman in the village of Palatine at 29 years old, was described in his biography on the website as a “leader, entrepreneur, and family man.”

NBC Chicago Political Reporter Mary Ann Ahern reported earlier this month Bailey would again seek the governorship.

Other Republicans to enter the race include DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, former Congressional candidate Joseph Severino and Ted Dabrowski, who was president of the conservative online publication Wirepoints prior to his resignation.

This year’s general election could be a rematch of 2022, if both Bailey and Pritzker clinch their respective parties’ nominations. Pritzker announced he would run for a third term earlier this summer.

Illinois is one of 13 states that does not have a gubernatorial term limit.
