When the Blackhawks take the ice for their split-squad practices on Thursday morning, the lineups look a lot like a team that’s starting to make some decisions — even though the Blackhawks have only played one preseason game.
The roster for “Group 1” of the Blackhawks’ practice Thursday includes 24 players. Included in those names: Artyom Levshunov, Ethan Del Mastro, Colton Dach, Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene. PTO camp invite Matt Grzelcyk also remains with the first group.
Landon Slaggert, Samuel Savoie, Joey Anderson, AJ Spellacy and Brett Seney are listed as unavailable. Anderson, who played in Detroit on Tuesday, and Savoie are new to this list from the Blackhawks.
As I’ve already noted, head coach Jeff Blashill said he intends to give Slaggert a look on his third line with Jason Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev to start the season (assuming he’s healthy). Spellacy was likely to return to Windsor when he’s healthy and/or his camp finishes. Anderson and Savoie were likely headed to Rockford.
If we include Slaggert with the first group, that’s 25 players competing for a maximum of 23 spots, a total that would have three skaters in the press box each night. Including Grzelcyk, there are eight remaining defensemen in “Group 1.” With two goalies, that leaves 15 forwards competing for 12 spots in the lineup each night.
It’s probably easier at this point to list the players who might be on the outside looking in at this point for the Blackhawks. Here are the players who will skate as “Group 2” on Thursday (one asterisk indicates an AHL invite; two indicates an unsigned prospect):
