Arrest made in Motel 6 robbery and shooting

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery and shooting that took place Sept. 9 at the Motel 6 North in Ukiah, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the motel at 1340 North State St. around 10:47 p.m. after a report of a man attempting to forcibly take a woman, authorities said. A witness told deputies he saw a man chasing a woman and believed it was a domestic incident.

When deputies arrived, the door to Room 134 was open but no one was inside. As deputies searched the area, other witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man flee the room. One witness said he saw the man fall as if he had been shot before getting up and running.

On Sept. 10, a man came forward and reported he had been robbed at the motel and that his friend had been shot. The Sheriff’s Office said the man also told deputies the suspect tried to kill him during the robbery.

Investigators processed the room Sept. 11 and found evidence consistent with a violent incident. They located a suspected bullet hole in the wall, suspected blood in the bathroom, and other evidence linked to a firearm being used inside the room.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 13, a second victim sought treatment at Adventist Health Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits with a gunshot wound to the hand. The man said he had been wounded several days earlier during the motel incident.

Detectives also learned a woman was involved in the robbery. She was later located and interviewed.

Through witness statements, surveillance video, and collected evidence, investigators identified Michael France, 36, as a suspect. Detectives developed probable cause to believe he carried out the robbery and shooting.

France was already due in Lake County Superior Court on Sept. 13 for an unrelated misdemeanor warrant. Mendocino County detectives coordinated with the Lake County District Attorney’s Office, and France was arrested at the courthouse without incident.

He was in possession of keys to a BMW motorcycle that investigators believe was used during the robbery. The Sheriff’s Office said the motorcycle had also been involved in a high-speed pursuit with the California Highway Patrol minutes after the Sept. 9 incident. Evidence connected to the robbery was later found on the motorcycle.

France was booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery, assault with a firearm, use of a firearm causing great bodily injury, and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $780,000.
