Around The Campus: John Mateer Hurt, Mike Gundy Fired, SEC Scheduling Update

Usually, the middle of the week is a relatively slow time in the college football news cycle. However, this week, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Oklahoma’s star QB and Heisman Trophy favorite John Mateer looks like he’ll miss at least a month. Mike Gundy was fired after a long time at Oklahoma State. Plus, the SEC announced schedule updates for next year. Let’s get to it.

John Mateer Sidelined With Hand Injury

Just a brutal break for the Oklahoma Sooners after the 4-0 start to their season. Starting quarterback and Heisman frontrunner John Mateer was revealed to have suffered a broken right (throwing) hand in the first quarter of Saturday’s 24-17 win over Auburn. The Washington State transfer was off to an outstanding start to the season with 1,215 yards, 6 TD, and a 67.4% completion percentage.

Most importantly, he had led OU to a pair of ranked wins and had them playing their best football in the last few years heading into the meat of their schedule, including the Red River Rivalry in just two weeks following a matchup with Kent State.

Mateer is set to undergo surgery to repair the broken bone in his right hand, and according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, there is no timeline for return, though it is expected that he can return at some point this season.

While Mateer is out, sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will get the nod as the team’s starter. He started four games last season and threw for 783 yards and 3 TD.

If Mateer can make it back on the sooner (no pun intended) side of the projected recovery period, he may still return with the chance to make a College Football Playoff run. If he misses four weeks as Thamel suggested was possible, he would miss games against Kent State, Texas, and at South Carolina, and have a chance to return when OU hosts Ole Miss on Oct 25.

Oklahoma’s Sammy Omosigho (7) and Jayden Jackson (65) sack Michigan’s Bryce Underwood (19) in the second half of the college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooner and the University of Michigan Wolverines at the Gaylord Family Ð Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Saturday, Sept 6, 2025.

Mike Gundy Fired At Oklahoma State

One of college football’s coaching mainstays is officially on the open market. On Tuesday, Oklahoma State announced the firing of long-time head coach Mike Gundy. Gundy took over the team in 2005. From then until now, he won 170 games as the Cowboys’ head coach, the Big 12 title, and 10+ games eight times. He did so while the program always played second fiddle in the state to Big Brother, Oklahoma.

While Gundy had a ton of success in Stillwater, that success had begun to fade significantly over the past few seasons. Oklahoma State won eight or fewer games in five of its last seven seasons, including a 3-9 mark in 2024 that included an 0-9 conference record. This season, Gundy’s squad was off to a 1-2 start, including an embarrassing loss at Oregon and a home loss to Tulsa.

This firing comes at an interesting time. On one hand, Gundy is a legend at Oklahoma State. He’s the school’s winningest coach, and his success created a new standard for the football program. On the other hand, over the past few seasons, he has failed badly to live up to that standard, and it felt like things were truly starting to slip out of his grasp.

It’s never fun to see coaches like Mike Gundy not get to go out on their own terms, but it also felt like it was definitely time for a change in Stillwater before things got too bad.

    SEC Announces New Scheduling Update

With the SEC moving to a nine-game conference schedule next season, they revealed each team’s upcoming opponents for 2026-29. Each SEC squad will have the same three annual opponents, six rotating conference games, and a yearly Power Four or Notre Dame non-conference matchup for the next four seasons.

When selecting each team’s annual opponents, the SEC did their best to honor rivalries and balance out competition. The schedule will also play out so that each team will have at least one matchup with every conference opponent over the course of two years.

Here’s a look at each team’s annual opponents for the next four seasons.
