Very sad news to pass on, as long-time Chicago Cubs minor league manager Welby Sheldon “Buddy” Bailey has passed away. He was 68.
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, for whom Bailey served as manager for seven seasons, including 2024, shared the news:

— Myrtle Beach Pelicans (@Pelicanbaseball) September 23, 2025Bailey had served in roles all over the Cubs organization for the last 20 years, including managerial stops at all of Myrtle Beach, South Bend, Tennessee, Iowa, and even Daytona. Before the Cubs, Bailey spent time in the Red Sox and Braves organizations, and also managed incredibly successfully in Venezuela.
Buddy Bailey’s mark is found all over the big league Cubs roster, where so many of the players crossed paths with him at one point or another.
“He was a very caring person, a hard-working person,” Cubs outfielder Kevin Alcántara said, per Marquee. “I hope his soul is at peace because he was a good person with me, with guys. He loved extra work. Honestly, he put people in a good place. For those reasons, many guys who passed through there are here now.”
