Caleb’s Growth, PFF QB Grades, Glizzy Madness, and Other Bears Bullets

A collection of Chicago Bears (and Bears-adjacent) news and notes as we prepare to turn the page to Week 4.

If you had told me a week ago that I’d be looking toward the Bears for a distraction from the Cubs, I’d have replied with a mighty chuckle. But the Northsiders haven’t won a game since clinching a playoff spot last Wednesday, while Chicago’s football team is coming off its best game in years. Chicago sports: Go figure. The Tribune, Sun-Times, ESPN, and others did hot dog content on Tuesday. But no one did it better than Eli, who chipped in with what might be my favorite story of the season to this point. There is nothing more Chicago than what we saw at The Wieners Circle yesterday. Let that be a reminder to all that nothing galvanizes this city like its football team — except maybe a free glizzy. A pre-emptive strike: If Bears quarterback Caleb Williams does not win the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week award, I am going to rage. Sep 21, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) drops back to pass against the Dallas Cowboys during the first half at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton-Imagn Images Ranking the 2024 NFL Draft class of quarterbacks by their 2025 Pro Football Focus grade through three weeks: Caleb Williams (78.1), Drake Maye (71.2), Jayden Daniels (71.0), Spencer Rattler (66.2), J.J. McCarthy (55.5), Michael Penix Jr. (51.4), Bo NIx (44.6) The Athletic’s Dianna Russini shared this quote from a league source about Chicago’s QB1 before Sunday’s Bears game, which I feel is important to (1) share and (2) frame in this way because of how things played out on Sunday afternoon: “We’re seeing less of that freelancing so far. Williams is standing tall, trusting his line and delivering on schedule more often. Whether that’s improved protection or Johnson drilling patience into him, it’s a subtle but meaningful shift.” How about 28 seconds of mic’d up D’Andre Swift on the flea flicker for your Wednesday morning?

    — NFL (@NFL) September 23, 2025 Because you might be thinking about it: Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he has not lost confidence in Matt Eberflus or his defensive coaching staff. We’ll see how long that lasts. This is fun: A Red Grange Chicago Bears jersey from the 1930s is going up for auction. It is the first known jersey from the legend’s career that is going on the auction block. Does anyone have a few bucks to share? (Tribune) I didn’t know this: The Los Angeles Chargers are the first NFL team to start 3-0, with all of their wins coming against divisional foes, since 2006. (Pro Football Talk) Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur doesn’t sound like a happy camper here:

    — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 22, 2025 In case you’re curious, there are just 74 days between now and the first Bears-Packers game of the 2025 NFL season. I was wondering why the Houston Texans dumped Chauncey Gardner-Johnson after just three games and $7 million in guarantees, but this snippet from the ESPN story on the news seems to explain it:

Each of the Texans’ three losses has been by 7 points or less. At minimum, according to team sources, Gardner-Johnson has allowed three big plays in those games that have contributed to the opposing offense scoring touchdowns, adding that Gardner-Johnson has struggled to consistently guard the correct opposing player when required to “match coverage” based on the Texans’ defensive call and the routes run by the offense, struggles that also occurred during walk-throughs in the lead-up to games.

With that being said, I’d be interested in the Bears kicking the tires on Gardner-Johnson. Chicago’s secondary could use all the help it can get. Maybe Ben Johnson (who crossed paths with CJGJ in Detroit) or Dennis Allen (who had the DB while with the Saints) having familiarity could lead the team to exploe this as an option.
