Presumably the Cubs Can Win Again, ABS, Shaw, Guardians, and Other Cubs Bullets

Lots to get into today on the heels of the Cubs’ first five-game losing streak of the season (which followed the first four-game losing streak of the season, all of which you definitely want to do heading into the postseason). I’ll have injury-related talk separated out shortly.

With last night’s ugly loss, paired with another Padres win, the Cubs’ magic number to take the top Wild Card spot remains at four. With five games left, I mean, theoretically it’s still very much within the Cubs’ control. I’d rather be in the Cubs’ spot than the Padres’ spot. But they will have to actually win a game or two to make this happen, something they have yet to do since clinching a playoff spot. Eventually the Cubs will win another game. Eventually.

    — Brett Taylor (@Brett_A_Taylor) September 24, 2025 It was a rare truly ugly night for the Cubs’ bullpen (still top-10 in ERA in September), which had six innings of coverage surprisingly thrust upon it, but still. Gotta be better, even accounting for the Dansby Swanson error. The bullpen, by the way, could get a boost from the return of Daniel Palencia as soon as tonight. Matt is spot on right here, both in noting the poor pitch that led to Francisco Alvarez’s decisive home run, but also the situation that helped make it possible:

Obviously not a good pitch on 3-1, but this is the importance of count leverage. 2-2 vs 3-1 is entirely different both for the pitcher & batter, & you're trying to not put on an extra runner ahead of Lindor/Soto, so you're trying to find the zone. While the hitter is geared up. t.co/luwmPOHLuY

    — Matt Clapp (@TheBlogfines) September 24, 2025 Speaking of automated balls and strikes, which is officially coming next season, the vote was 9-2 on the competition committee: six owners voting yes, three players voting yes, one player voting no, and the umpire representative voting no, per Bob Nightengale. Interestingly, the player votes weren’t just the decision of those reps – each team took a collective vote, which wound up 23-7, so the reps made their four votes roughly match that sentiment. Matt Shaw returned to the team last night after missing Sunday’s game while in attendance at the memorial for Charlie Kirk. He spoke about his decision to go:

#Cubs rookie Matt Shaw discusses his decision to leave the team Sunday to attend Charlie Kirk’s funeral and his relationship with Kirk. Shaw says Kirk texted him after almost every game and was a big Cubs supporter. @WGNNews pic.twitter.com/leZtoF1odw

    — Josh Frydman (@Josh_Frydman) September 23, 2025 I won’t tell anyone how to feel about the politics of any of this, but I do think it’s worth hearing Shaw’s comments. A personal, real-life friend of his was murdered. We have to let humans be humans, or else we lose our own humanity. The Guardians beat the Tigers last night to move into a tie atop the AL Central standings, which is truly incredible:
