Work began on the $2.6bn design-build project in November 2021. It topped out in November 2024.
The terminal now has 19 gates, updated passenger amenities and an outdoor check-in. The contractors added 8km of roadways, bridges and a 5,200-space parking area.
Terminal 1 is part of a $3bn multi-phase project that when finished in 2028 will have 30 gates over three storeys with a central security checkpoint, departure lounges, airside airline operation zones and baggage handling systems.
Work on the second phase is due to begin in October 2025 and includes a fully automated outbound and inbound baggage handling system, a “luminous wave wall”, commissioned artwork by seven artists and an outdoor dining area with a downtown city skyline view.
The joint venture won the contract in September 2020. In November 2024 Aecom was awarded a programme management role on the project.
Mario Martinez, FlatironDragados’ senior vice president, said: “Together, we’ve delivered a modern gateway that strengthens regional mobility, supports future growth and elevates the passenger experience for millions of travellers.”
The current Terminal 1 was designed to handle 2.5 million passengers a year when it was finished in 1967, the authority says. That figure has grown to around 20 million.
