Ryder Cup Unrestricted: McIlroy supported by wife Erica, ‘odd duck’ DeChambeau slammed, legend’s X-rated USA rant

The opening tee shots of the 2025 Ryder Cup are edging ever closer but there’s already plenty of story-lines coming out of the all-star event.

Team Europe and Team USA have been working hard at Bethpage Black over the first two days of tournament week.

Both squads went through their prep again yesterday as fans were welcomed onto the iconic course for the first time.

The players then enjoyed the traditional Welcome Dinner on Tuesday night.

Bad weather in New York has meant organisers have brought forward the Opening Ceremony by 24 hours to tonight while we’ll also enjoy the All-Star Celebrity Match today.

And so, with another busy day in store at Bethpage, here’s all the latest tidbits you might have missed in talkSPORT.com’s ‘Ryder Cup Unrestricted’ series…

    The McIlroys’ night out

The glitz and glamour were on full show at the Ryder Cup Teams’ Welcome Dinner on Tuesday night.

The two sides were joined by their wives and girlfriends at Hempstead House in Sands Point, New York for the pre-event gala.

The players were suited and booted while their partners dressed to the nines for the relaxed evening of mingling.

Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica were joined by Jon and Kelley Rahm, Matt and Katherine Fitzpatrick and the rest of the squad.

While the Europeans cut relaxed figures, the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley appeared more pensive.

One highlight saw the still-single Viktor Hovland, famous for his hilarious gala photos with Jose Maria Olazabal in Rome two years ago, link up with Sepp Straka for the photo op.

Straka’s wife has remained home to look after their new baby so kept Hovland company this year.

    Warning ahead

Bethpage Black’s infamous first tee warning sign has been moved.

The iconic plaque has been relocated to the tunnel linking the practice green to the first hole grandstand and will be the last thing players see before they arrive on the tee box.

The sign simply reads: “WARNING – The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers.”

    ‘Odd duck’ DeChambeau

Brandel Chamblee has torn into Bryson DeChambeau on the eve of the Ryder Cup.

DeChambeau is the only LIV Golf player on the US team and has been praised for his hard work in maintaining a good relationship with his teammates despite logistical challenges all year.

But Chamblee thinks DeChambeau’s social media antics and eagerness to be loved by the fans could cause major issues.

He said: “He’s trying to drum up some interest for himself.

“I think it was pretty poignant [at his press conference] that he didn’t mention the goal of winning the Ryder Cup, he didn’t talk about playing on a team and how much that meant.

“What he did was talk about his YouTube channel. If we want to talk about the numbers that are generated from that, it’s pretty dubious. I’m pretty sure bots are generating those views, there may be some interest too, but that’s what he wants to talk about, not the team, not the Ryder Cup.

“It’s one of the reasons why I think he’s going to be such a difficult person to pair with.

“No doubt he’s one hell of a golfer, no doubt he has his moments of generosity with fans but he’s an odd duck when he’s trying to blend in with the team.

“He has so many potential bulletin-board mistakes that I think he would be a captain’s nightmare.”

    LIV Golf vibes

While DeChambeau’s high jinks may not be to Chamblee’s liking, the New York fans have relished seeing the two-time US Open champion in action so far this week.

And it would appear Team USA have attempted to make DeChambeau feel right at home by adopting some of LIV’s tactics around the course.

The driving range has been in full party mood with DJ music blaring out.

LIV’s mantra is ‘Golf, but louder’ and it seems the Team USA Ryder Cup chiefs are bringing some of that pizzazz to Bethpage.

Chamblee did not hold back in his criticism of DeChambeauGetty

    A tough walk

As is the way with television broadcasts of golf, the pictures on screen have a habit of flattening out the course.

But Bethpage is unbelievably hilly and every hole has a steep decline and then incline back to the green.

It will be a true test of fitness and raises the question about if any player will be able to play all five sessions.

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler have both been heavily tipped to play every match but conditions could make that all but impossible.

Team Europe have looked to remedy any sore legs at the end of the day by having a custom sauna built in their team room.

    Poulter lets loose

Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter has ripped into USA golf fans, saying he’d love to ‘taser’ them.

In an interview with SPORTbible alongside Tyrrell Hatton, Poulter was asked if American fans were better than European.

He strongly disagreed before ranting: “I don’t even know where to start. There’s no… I mean… f****** mashed potatoes and all that f****** b******* that you hear is madness.

“Get in the hole, get in the hole! It’s a 600-yard par 5, you f****** idiot.

“I actually just want to borrow the taser [from] the security guard just to let one go per hole would be amazing.

“Imagine that, you got one taser per hole. That’d be awesome. That’d go right between the eyes. Have it.

“We don’t get that at the Open Championship. You don’t get it anywhere. It’s only in America the stupidness comes out.

“F***, I mean, it’s just so annoying. It’s annoying. There’s no need for it, right?

“Our fans, when they come and watch golf, are very respectful.

“I’m not completely dissing the American fans because the atmosphere in America is amazing.”
