High school volleyball league standings are taking shape in the LA Daily news area
An exciting week of tournament play featuring a ton of local City and Southern Section teams included a variety of highlights. Here are some of the headlines.
Thousand Oaks catches fire, beats Oaks Christian chaotic five-set battle
“It was probably the most incredible match that I’ve ever been part of, and I’ve been around for a while,” said Thousand Oaks coach James Park.
Thousand Oaks coach James Park was in awe of his team, which never stopped fighting in Tuesday’s five-set win over Oaks Christian. The Lancers beat the hosting Lions in five sets with an unbelievable 26-24 final set score. Thousand Oaks trailed 8-2 and 14-11 in the final set but just refused to give up. Senior libero Leah Curtain made a tremendous diving dig at 24-24, which ended up being an assist as well, as the second touch was tipped out of reach of Oaks Christian (15-2, 4-1). Curtain then went back to serve again and ended the night with an ace for match point.
“It was incredible,” Park said in a phone interview. “I think all of us have watched that last set or the last few points of the match over and over again. It looked better than Kershaw’s last game.”
Saylor Halvorsen led with 22 kills while Halle Bryce added 19. Both players, as well as London Halvorsen all added a pair of blocks each.
The Lancers (22-1, 5-0) are without a doubt on fire as the victory came in what is now a 16-match winning streak. Thousand Oaks scorched a talented Newbury Park team in straight sets on Thursday before tearing through the weekend and defeating Palisades in the gold bracket of the Chatsworth Tournament.
Lancers setter Hailey Lauritzen was named tournament MVP while Curtain also earned all-tournament honors.
Sierra Canyon takes silver at Durango
Sierra Canyan was also tearing up tournament play this weekend. The Trailblazers took home second-place honors in the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Sierra Canyon was solid throughout the weekend in the tourney that featured 64 of the top teams in the Western U.S. The Blazers were perfect until falling 2-1 in the Championship Bracket finals match against league rival Marymount.
The Sailors won the match, 21-25, 25-15, 25-12.
Setter Lucky Fasavalu, libero Maddie Zaragoza and outside hitter McKenna McIntosh were named all-tournament for the Blazers (22-3, 3-0).
Sierra Canyon will still have two shots at Marymount in Mission League play, starting with a home match on Monday, September 29.
West Ranch remains perfect in league, Saugus just needs one rematch
West Ranch (10-3, 6-0) finished its first leg of Foothill League play undefeated in both matches and sets.
The Wildcats earned a road sweep over the Canyon Cowboys on Thursday with solid all-around performances across the board.
Setter Dani Clewis finished with 34 assists, 10 digs and a trio of blocks. The majority of her sets went to sophomore Devyn Kobe, who had 11 kills, and junior Karleigh Larson, who led with 12.
West Ranch will have two weeks off of league play, but heads to Campbell Hall on Thursday.
Saugus (21-4, 5-1) is in striking distance and just needs one rematch to make its way to get back in front of the Foothill League race.
The Centurions have won three straight, including a straight-set win over Cleveland that notched coach Zach Ambrose’s 400th career win.
Saugus returns to Foothill League play on Thursday at Canyon.
Louisville win streak hits 13
The Royals girls volleyball program has seen a gradual turnaround since coach Frankie Valdez, formerly of Harvard-Westlake, took over at the helm three years ago.
However, 2025 has seen Louisville (13-1) skyrocket with 13 straight wins, which Valdez knows is no thanks to luck.
“Our motto is, ‘Our volleyball is enough,’” Valdez said in a phone interview. “We deserve everything that comes our way because we train hard. So it’s not out of luck, we didn’t get lucky to be here. We trained to deserve this opportunity.”
Louisville capped off its latest perfect week with a pair of victories in Angeles League play, a league the program has never won. The Royals beat Flintridge Sacred Heart in four sets, swept the reigning champion Marlborough and also added a nonleague, straight-set win over Cate.
Leading the way for Louisville are outside hitter Julina Frobatta, libero Halle Jimenez, senior Ferlyn Alvarenga and middle blocker Zoe Kirovsky. The first two captain the team, while both outside hitters lead the team in kills. Valdez is proud of every member of his team but takes special pride in Kirovsky’s growth, as the junior had no volleyball background before about two years ago, but now is getting interest from Division 1 NCAA programs.
“I think the secret is that by year three, now everyone that is in the program is sold on the mission, the goals, everyone’s on the same page, and we play with intention,” Valdez said. “Everyone knows that everyone has a certain role, and they’re happy with that role.”
The Royals’ goal is to return to the playoffs on their own merit and see what the team can do. Louisville also has its best shot in years to win a league title, but will have tough dates with Notre Dame and Marlborough. Should the team top the standings, it would be the program’s first league championship in 10 years, dating back to the Sunshine League days.
For now, Valdez wants his team to remain steady but also aggressive as the team hosts Immaculate Heart on Tuesday and heads to Notre Dame on Thursday.
“I would love to win league,” Valdez said. “I know it’s going to be really hard, especially since we’ve never done it. But little by little, we’re chipping at it. … I would love to see my seniors that have worked so hard be at the top of the league. But it’s not the end of the world for me. A league is a league, it doesn’t say anything. CIF is the big dance where everyone is at.”
