The Cubs being off yesterday felt like a nice reset after the sweep in Cincinnati, especially with the Bears having won in impressive fashion on Sunday. From a fan perspective, I got to turn off my Cubs brain for a bit and just enjoy Bears afterglow. Rare to be able to do that in-season, especially in the final week, so it was appreciated.
And now we’re back to Cubs brain, where a couple wins in these final two series will PROBABLY be enough to secure the top Wild Card spot and home field for that initial playoff series against the Padres, who also happen to be the team chasing the Cubs for the top Wild Card spot. The magic number for the Cubs is four. The Mets are up first … Speaking of the Padres, they are currently playing the just-clinched Brewers, who were no help last night:FREDDY FERMIN SENDS TO PADRES TO THE POSTSEASON! pic.twitter.com/mK6Xfv7Z6P

— AT (@YankeeWRLD) September 22, 2025 Just as big of a story this week for the Cubs as the wins and losses: can Kyle Tucker play? Getting home games in the playoffs is obviously great, but if Tucker is toast, you wonder far the Cubs can advance anyway. He was acquired specifically to be the superstar bat that anchors this lineup. For much of the season, he was. They need him back ASAP. The expectation at last check was that Tucker, who’s been away from the team in Tampa working with his own physical therapy group, will not start tonight. He’ll test out the calf, and then the Cubs will see if he can play tomorrow or Thursday or whatever. © David Banks-Imagn Images Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn has to have relatively minor knee surgery, but is expected to be ready for Spring Training. The $1.7 billion Tampa Bay Rays sale to Patrick Zalupski has been approved by the owners, so it’s done. The Rays have a new ownership group for the first time in 20 years. We’ll see what it winds up meaning, beyond the commitment to stay in the Tampa area.
