ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Broadway hit “Hamilton” opens in Rochester in November and the head of the Rochester Broadway Theatre League is worried about online ticket sales.
“The ticketing industry has designed ways to confuse the consumers, especially older consumers into thinking they have to pay too much for a ticket,” said Arnie Rothschild, chair of the Rochester Broadway Theatre League.
The most expensive seat in the house is $181 but News10NBC found an opening night ticket selling online for more than $900.
Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “I looked at some of your $70 tickets up there in the corner and the secondary market has them selling for a little bit more than $70, but not outrageous. What’s the problem then?”
Arnie Rothschild: “The problem is why should someone have to pay twice the face value of a ticket than for what they can buy it for legally and legitimately.”
If you search online you’ll see warnings like “Tickets selling fast” and to get them “before they’re sold.”
So News10NBC did an experiment. Brean went to the box office with Rothschild to see how many Hamilton tickets are left.
“About how many tickets to we have available for sale?” Rothschild asked at the window.
The window has its own warning sticker – “online tickets may be more expensive or invalid.”
Berkeley Brean: “So for the first week, how many tickets are available?”Arnie Rothschild: “There’s over 3,000 available.”
It’s about 7,000 available Hamilton tickets over the two week run.
There are only two authorized ticket sellers for RBTL: the box office and Ticketmaster.
In the lobby, Rothschild searched tickets on other online sites that make it seem like tickets are scarce.
“And these are all tickets that would be $120 tickets at over $200,” Rothschild said.
“If you were to stand outside the building, let’s say you bought a $70 ticket and you stood outside the building and you offered it for sale for $150 you could be arrested, because that’s scalping,” Rothschild said. “And yet it’s done all the time online.”
The most you’ll pay for a ticket at the box office is $169. The most you’ll pay at Ticketmaster is $181. But how about this deal – opening night for Hamilton for an online ticket – $935.
That ticket is sold on Events Tickets Center website.
The company shared this statement with News10NBC: “Our platform is a resale marketplace, where customers can purchase valid resale tickets from individual resellers who set their own prices, based on their perception of an event’s popularity. We do not set the prices of any tickets on our platform.
For any event, some sellers purchase tickets through box offices (like other consumers) while other sellers access tickets through third-party suppliers and other resellers. Many sellers even belong to special fan clubs, and as a result have access to presales that the general public does not have. Sellers may also have special deals with sports teams, band managers, or event promoters.
While some sellers may set high resale prices for the tickets they hold, our platform has a variety of purchase options and price points for anyone interested in tickets for upcoming performances.”
