The major change was made to promote a sense of fairness among voters, encouraging them to read through the entire list rather than settling on the first few alphabetical entries.
“This ballot update brings our process in line with standard voting best practices … and further ensures the process is fair and equitable for all entries,” said Ruby Marchand, chief awards and global industry officer for the Recording Academy.
“As with any change, there will be an adjustment period in the first year but, our staff will be on hand to assist voters with any questions,” Marchand went on to say.
While all categories on the first-round ballot will be in randomized order, voters can still download a PDF copy of the list to access it through alphabetical order. As with previous years, voters will also be able to use a search tool to find specific artists featured on the list.
Interestingly, the Grammys have also partnered with elite tech industries to comprise their lists, ensuring that no two randomized list are identical to one another.
The voting process will officially take place from October 3 to October 15.
"This year, the ballot will appear in randomized order (not alphabetical), so giving yourself time to navigate and review thoroughly is especially important," Marchand advised. "Don’t wait until the last day – or worse, the last hour – to submit, as technical issues can derail your vote.”
