Tony Bellew thinks that Andy Ruiz Jr is the challenge that Moses Itauma needs.
Itauma emerged onto the professional scene in 2023 and has since established an impressive reputation in the heavyweight division.
After claiming his 11th early round stoppage in August against Dillian Whyte, the boxing fraternity have been debating who should be the next man to face Itauma.
Former world champion, Bellew, has explained what he thinks the best course of action is in order for Itauma to prove his talents.
In an interview with Pundit Arena, he said: “Moses has got to go past six rounds. No one can be picking Moses against the top-level heavyweights if he hasn’t been past six rounds.
“I don’t doubt how good he is. I think he’s absolutely exceptional. But you will never know how good he is until he goes past six rounds.”
Bellew then revealed exactly who he thinks the 20-year-old should be facing, saying: “I thought Andy Ruiz would be the perfect fight for him.
“I think Andy Ruiz throws enough shots. He comes to win. He ain’t lying down for nobody.
“I think that would be a really good fight to make.”
Ruiz Jr handed Anthony Joshua his first career defeat in a shock knockout win in 2019.
The referee called off their bout in the seventh round after Joshua went down twice within a couple of minutes, which resulted in Ruiz Jr snatching the Briton’s WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles.
Although he went on to lose his newly claimed titles in the rematch, when the Watford powerhouse edged a unanimous decision win.
With a pro record of 35-2-1, Ruiz Jr has only won two of his four fights following his title win against Joshua in 2019Mark Robinson / Matchroom Boxing‘The Destroyer’ then won two bouts back-to-back before sustaining an injury in his clash when he controversially drew against Jarrell Miller last year.
After being sidelined for a year with a hand injury, Ruiz Jr is now eyeing up a comeback for either late 2025 or early 2026.
And his target return could align with what is expected to be Itauma’s third appearance this year, December 13 as announced by his promoter Frank Warren.
Who else could Moses Itauma fight next?
As we wait for an announcement to reveal who the rising star will be opposite the next time we see him in the ring, speculation continues to grow.
While he was believed to be facing Filip Hrgovic, it was recently revealed that the Croatian had priced himself out of negotiations.
Some have even branded Itauma ‘Britain’s Mike Tyson’ after his early successesGettyItauma has since been linked with names like Joseph Parker, Jermaine Franklin, Martin Bakole, and now Ruiz Jr.
Whoever it is, they will be taking on what seems to be a huge challenge of evading an early-round stoppage at the hands of Itauma.
Should Ruiz Jr find himself leaving the ring victorious following a clash with Itauma, it would be a sizeable scalp and one comparable to his famous victory over Joshua.
