Technically, there are three roster moves here, and yet you will not experience any of them:
Nate Pearson has been designated for assignment. Eli Morgan has been activated from the 60-day IL. Eli Morgan has been optioned to Iowa. All paper transactions at Iowa, essentially, and involving a couple relievers who were expected to be key parts of the big league bullpen back in March and April. It wasn’t to be.
Eli Morgan, who has been out for most of the season with arm issues, has been pitching at Iowa since late August (fairly well) and his rehab stint was up. So the Cubs had to reinstate him, and then option him to Iowa. It’s TBD, officially, on whether this will use his final option year. I believe this means he will not have used 20 days on optional assignment – you get big league service time when on the 60-day IL – which means he won’t use an option year this season, and will thus have one left going into 2026, which, in turn, would probably ensure he gets tendered after the season.
The Cubs acquired Morgan in one of their first moves of last offseason, trading outfield prospect Alfonsin Rosario for the formerly-quite-good Guardians reliever. Rosario, 21, was the Cubs’ 6th rounder in 2023, and he went on to put up enormous numbers in the Cleveland system at High-A to start the year, before falling back a bit at Double-A while dealing with strikeout issues. Still very young, though, and I’m thinking the Cubs will hope to get some value out of Morgan next year to justify the move.
Meanwhile, the Nate Pearson flyer just never took hold. The 28-year-old righty would flash big stuff, just as he did with the Blue Jays, but never managed enough command to really get the expected production out of his pitches. He put up great numbers at Triple-A this year, but not in the big leagues, and it was clear he wasn’t going to get another shot in the final week (or in the postseason). So the Cubs designate him for assignment now, and if he clears waivers, they could try to sign him to a new minor league deal for 2026 before he hits the open market. I think it’s pretty unlikely to play out that way, and the most likely outcome here is that the two sides decide it didn’t work out and go their separate ways.
