Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s comments on the handshake boycott have gone viral after India secured a six-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025. Gambhir was seen asking his players to avoid handshakes with the Pakistan team after their second consecutive victory over the archrivals.
It all began when Suryakumar Yadav refused to shake hands with Salman Ali Agha during the toss in the group stage match between the two teams. Indian players also didn’t shake hands with Pakistan players after the match. It is worth mentioning that Indian players avoided greeting the match officials.
India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, began their Super Four campaign with a six-wicket win. The Men in Blue chased down a 172-run target with seven balls to spare at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, September 21.
Tilak Varma hit the match-winning four on the penultimate ball of the 19th over. Varma and Hardik Pandya, who guided India past the finish line, walked straight to the dressing room, skipping the customary post-match handshake with the Pakistan players.
As in their earlier league encounter, there was no handshake between India captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha at the toss.
After owning Pakistani jokers Tilak Varma walked straight towards the dressing room, but Hardik Pandya shook hands with the match official in front of the Pakistani players and said like We don’t shake hands with jokers.?#INDvsPAK Hardik Pandya showing aukat to jokers of Pak? pic.twitter.com/zTcMPThRSR

Are Umpire Se To Mil Le - Gautam Gambhir on No-Handshake Stance
Gautam Gambhir made a slight change to the team’s no-handshake stance. In a viral video, Gautam Gambhir was seen instructing his players to come out of the dressing room and greet the on-field umpires. He made it clear that the policy of avoiding handshakes with the Pakistan players would remain.
Following his instructions, the Indian players walked onto the field and approached the Pakistan players, but only shook hands with the match officials, including umpire Andy Pycroft, before returning to the dressing room.
Gambhir can be heard asking players, “Are umpire se to mil le” (“At least greet the officials”). India showed respect for the officials while maintaining their stance against Pakistan.

India Set to Face Bangladesh in Next Super Four Clash
Openers Shubman Gill (47) and Abhishek Sharma (74) dominated Pakistan’s bowling during the run chase. They added a 105-run partnership off 59 balls that eased the pressure on the middle order. The Men in Blue chased down the target with seven balls to spare.
India will next face Bangladesh in Dubai on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Pakistan, led by Salman Ali Agha, will take on Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. A win for India against Bangladesh would all but guarantee their place in the final, whereas Pakistan will be fighting to stay in contention.
Earlier in the Super Four stage, Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in Dubai. The top two teams from the Super Four stage will meet in the final on September 28 in Dubai.
