Bears Nightcap: Tough Week of Practice Pays Off for Chicago

Caleb Williams tied a career-best with four passing touchdowns on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field, helping Ben Johnson notch his first NFL victory as a head coach with the guy he replaced standing on the opposite sideline watching.

The fourth and final touchdown was the knockout punch Williams and the Bears lacked when they collapsed late in a winnable game against the Minnesota Vikings the last time they played at Soldier Field.

Williams’ four-yard touchdown pass to DJ Moore in the end zone was the all she wrote for the Dallas Cowboys, who were on the ropes for nearly 10 minutes in the third quarter as Ben Johnson’s offense orchestrated a 19-play touchdown drive, the longest scoring drive for Chicago since 2001.

Caleb Williams was the engine that drove the Bears to victory on Sunday, but he wasn’t alone.

Make no mistake, Caleb Williams was the engine that drove the Chicago Bears on Sunday. But he wasn’t alone. The defense, bruised and battered, produced four takeaways and held the Dallas Cowboys to just 14 points, something no one would have believed this morning.

Dominique Robinson’s first sack since Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season ended the Cowboys’ drive that preceded the 19-play marathon drive, and Tremaine Edmunds, playing alongside Noah Sewell and rookie Ruben Hyppolite II with T.J. Edwards sidelined, intercepted a pair of passes in the second half.

Tyrique Stevenson, who has been awful this season, helped Chicago take an early lead, ending another Dallas drive by chasing down Javonte Williams and forcing a fumble at the tail end of a 26-yard scamper by Williams into Chicago territory. Even the savvy veteran Kevin Byard III got involved defensively, sealing the deal with a late interception in the end zone.

Probably most importantly, Ben Johnson put together his best-looking offensive game plan of the season, helping Chicago outplay a Dallas team with multiple holes of its own on the defensive side of the ball. Johnson’s offense was 57 percent on third down, averaging 6.8 yards per play. Williams was issued a lofty goal of 70 percent completion percentage by his head coach at the start of training camp, and he completed 68 percent of his passes on Sunday in the victory, finishing with 298 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 142.6 passer rating.

Caleb Williams: “It starts at practice.”

Ben Johnson said earlier this week that Chicago’s practices weren’t up to snuff and that things would be different this week. Following Sunday’s victory, his quarterback said the team’s gameday results this week were a credit to the different tone of practices.

“I think it starts with practice,” Williams said at his post-game press conference. “The preparation when we’re between the white lines, going out there and competing against each other and having these tough practices. It builds the confidence for us to be able to go out here and have a game like we had today.

“The consistency becomes a thing when you have a day like today, and you can come back and do it again and again. It’s something that we have to work on and keep striving for every day in practice, and then when we get out here in the game.”

Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III said on the Bears radio broadcast following the game that practices “weren’t easy” this week. Burden was as involved in the game plan as he’s been all season, catching three passes on three targets for 101 yards and a score—a 65-yard touchdown reception on a flea flicker from Caleb Williams, something Burden said the team installed this week during practices.

Speaking of that flea flicker, Williams’ throw traveled 62.1 yards in the air, the longest traveling completed pass of the season (via Next Gen Stats), and it was an absolute dime by the second-year quarterback.

    Getting everyone involved …

Williams continued to look for his favorite receiver, Rome Odunze, targeting him a team-high seven times, three of which were completions for 62 yards and a 35-yard touchdown. However, he got everyone more involved today, throwing each of his four touchdowns to a different receiver, with Odunze, Burden, Moore, and tight end Cole Kmet getting in on the scoring fun.

Six pass catchers registered three-plus targets on the afternoon, and five (Moore, Olamide Zaccheaus, D’Andre Swift, Odunze, and Burden) caught three or more passes.

Williams’ excellent afternoon covered up the warts in the rushing attack, which only generated 75 yards on 24 carries that weren’t attributed to the quarterback. Swift rushed for 33 yards on 13 carries (2.5), and rookie Kyle Monangai netted 16 rushing yards on six carries (2.7).
