Andy Murray has finally admitted he had a hard time when Emma Raducanu inadvertently curtailed his Wimbledon retirement.
The two-time Championships winner was taking part in his final event at SW19 last year and attempted to stick around longer than expected.
Having had to pull out of the singles at an event where he became a British sporting icon, Murray entered the men’s doubles with brother Jamie, and the mixed doubles with Raducanu.
However, after losing in the first round of the men’s, his mixed campaign was then over as Raducanu reversed her decision to focus on the singles as she was struggling with injury.
As Britain’s only two major winners in the modern era their team-up was highly anticipated, and its cancellation stole the headlines.
Now reflecting on the media storm for the first time, Murray told The Times: “We exchanged multiple messages since Wimbledon and things were fine after we cleared everything up.
“It was obviously a pretty emotional time for me and everyone around me, so it was hard but, like I said, I was really happy with the way that my career finished – I got to play my last match at Wimbledon with my brother.
“Emma’s not someone that beforehand we were communicating all the time or discussing ideas about her game and things like that, so that hasn’t changed.”
How Judy Murray made the situation worse
Despite Murray’s silence, Raducanu was forced to comment on the issue, particularly when her potential playing partner’s mother, Judy Murray, added to the social media storm.
The former coach responded to a post on social media about Raducanu’s withdrawal by writing the words: “Yes astonishing.”
She later claimed she was being sarcastic, adding: “Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days.
“Pretty sure the scheduling (fourth match court 1 with a singles following day) will have played a major part in any decision making.”
Judy Murray posted this response to Raducanu’s decision to pull out of her son’s Wimbledon swansong and caused a media stormX: JudyMurray Raducanu still felt bad about the situation a year laterGettyRaducanu later commented on the news, saying: “I’m sure she didn’t mean it,” but a year on and back at Wimbledon in 2025 she admitted she still feels disappointed with what happened.
“I hope he’s forgiven me for last year, I still feel bad about it,” Raducanu said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him around and having a conversation.
“I think he would give great advice, he’s been in a similar situation and would probably understand a lot of things that I’m also going through.”
Why Murray has only just spoken about Raducanu
Murray, on his part, has also spoken up about how he’s keen not to criticise young players coming through.
Raducanu has attracted incredible media attention due to her record-breaking US Open win in 2021 and her lack of form and injuries since.
Raducanu is now the most high profile Brit on tour following Murray’s retirementGettyHaving experienced similar pressure, Murray said: “I know when I was a young British player I found it very, very unhelpful when people that you knew or looked up to were being critical of you after losses publicly.
“You respect their opinions and often they might differ from what your coach is telling you. When you’re 20 years old, you’re still responsible for the team that you employ.”
What happened after the Wimbledon bust-up?
Raducanu had her joint-best Wimbledon result in 2024 in the fourth round and in 2025 has continued some improved momentum having put her injury woes behind her.
The 22-year-old is now on the verge of re-entering the top 32 and becoming a seeded player again during a year of solid results against top ten players.
As for Murray, he opted to stage one last hurrah at the Paris Olympics before retiring.
He again had to pull out of singles, but made it to the quarter-finals of the doubles and was on the brink of competing for a medal with long-time friend Dan Evans.
