A beloved California theme park caused a ruckus earlier this week when it announced with no more than a week's notice that it would be shuttering tomorrow, Sept. 21, for the rest of the season—sparking fury among season pass-holders and other visitors with travel plans for previously scheduled holiday events.
Sesame Place San Diego, based on the classic children's series, of course, announced via social media last Sunday, Sept. 15, that the park is set to switch to a seasonal schedule at the end of the weekend—a big change from their previous year-round operating hours.
The announcement noted the intent to make "every visit filled with more excitement, attractions, and activities to enjoy." It explained, "By focusing on our most popular times of year, we can deliver the best possible experience from the moment guests arrive until the moment they leave."
In exchange for the inconvenience and to "ensure continued value," Sesame Place San Diego is "providing each pass holder with a complimentary SeaWorld Fun Card valid through the remainder of the year," which grants unlimited admission to SeaWorld and its seasonal events—however, most followers weren't too keen on the resolution.
"This is ridiculous," one vented. "we had trips planned out and they end up doing this?!! Smh… very disappointing to say the least!"
"we only used the passes like 1 time. We planned to go back on sep. 27th and now this? Im super frustrated," another complained.
"My family planned to travel from out of state to attend the Halloween Spooktacular. How do you expect people to plan entire vacations around your posted operating schedule and pull the plug with less than two weeks notice?" someone else demanded.
"What about those of us who purchased dine with Elmo tickets for 10/04?!??! How do you advertise the counts spooktacular just to pull it at the last minute?!" the frustration continued.
"Who is crushing our babies heart[s]? BOUGHT tickets for Oct 18. Family is coming from Washington . Plans have been made!! And announcing this on FB!! Are they serious. No email or refund !" another exclaimed.
"I want a full refund!" one requested, calling the move "straight up robbery" after their previous visits to the park ended after "half" of it being "not operational."
"Sounds like bait and switch," another suggested. "I think you owe people their money back."
"YEP," somebody else agreed emphatically, pointing to "All the FLASH SALES the last week or two."
"C'MON," they added.
The Offered Compensation Isn't Seen as a Fair Deal for Many
Many folks wrote that they already have access to SeaWorld, either through a Platinum Pass—which offers unlimited admission to both parks, as well as Busch Gardens—or through separate park passes.
"My family of four has Platinum passes, so we don't need SeaWorld passes. What solution do you offer?" one asked. "We have the Platinum pass because my daughters love Sesame Place. We bought the 'annual passes' in April and only enjoyed them for 6 months."
So far, Sesame Place San Diego has not responded to any of their inquiries about earning a refund or a complimentary 2026 annual pass to make up for the unexpected change for those who can't make use of the SeaWorld offering.
One slighted would-be park-goer said they sent multiple emails about the issue with no response, leading several others to rally behind them.
"GIVE A REFUND! WHOS going to schedule a flight for a year later?!? That’s UNACCEPTABLE," one wrote, while another reiterated, "you need to give refunds!"
One top fan was eager to see what the park would do with its newfound free time, though, writing, "It's quite a big move but looking forward to seeing better experiences for many families that come here."
Sesame Place San Diego is scheduled to reopen in Spring 2026, so it'll be a few months yet before fans can decide if it was worth it.
The original Sesame Place in Pennsylvania is unaffected by the changes.
