You know, just because the Cubs *CAN* backdoor their way into the top Wild Card spot doesn’t mean they should be testing those limits. Maybe win a game or two just to make it a little easier?
The homers killed the Cubs again tonight, with the Reds hitting three to account for four runs. Each of the three relievers in the game gave up a dinger, and otherwise pitched well. That’s kinda the thing about homers, though.
The Cubs had two of them, too, both solo, but didn’t do much offensively otherwise. Reese McGuire sure tried his darnedest – must love this park – so he gets the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game in a losing effort.
The Cubs got the tying run to third base with one out in the 8th, but unfortunately Ian Happ and Moises Ballesteros couldn’t lay off the high hard ones from Tony Santillan. Which probably didn’t matter much anyway, because the Reds added yet another homer in the bottom of the frame to create some additional distance.
For what amounts to a fill-in start (at Great American), that was hardly a rough one for Javier Assad. No, he wasn’t quite as sharp as you’d like him to be, but when you’re bounced around in roles and levels, it’s hard to do much better than that. I don’t put this on him.
