Sprinter Sophie Miller Melendez has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Georgia Southern University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim at Georgia Southern University! Thank you to my parents for always supporting my dreams; and to my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for encouraging me and being part of my journey. A special thank you to Coach Morgan and Coach Emma for making me feel so welcomed and at home and giving me this opportunity. See you down south #hailsouthern
A rising senior at Verona Area High School in Verona, Wisconsin, Melendez has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Verona Area Swim Team, where she primarily specializes in sprint freestyle and backstroke.
Melendez is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw her drop nearly a second in the 200 free and 200 back, and just under half a second in the 100 free. At the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 1 State Championships in February, she helped Verona Area to fifth in the 400 free relay (53.06, PB leadoff), in addition to touching ninth in the 200 free (1:53.76, PB) and 14th in the 100 back (58.00, SB). She went on to time trial a 2:05.45 PB in the 200 back about a month later to close out the season.

Melendez’s current lifetime bests in the 100 back and 200 free would have qualified her for the ‘C’ finals, setting her up to be an immediate contributor with still two full seasons of training to go before lining up at her first conference meet.
