Bears Rewind: Justin Fields Not Enough for the Bears in Arlington

Matt Eberflus returns to Soldier Field on Sunday, this time as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. The last time the Bears and Cowboys met, Eberflus was a first-year head coach in Chicago. Much has changed since then, but before we watch tomorrow’s game, let’s revisit the last time these two teams met in this week’s Bears Rewind.

Justin Fields Not Enough for the Bears in Arlington

The last time the Bears saw the Cowboys, it was a wild afternoon in Arlington that showed both the promise of Justin Fields and the growing pains of a young team trying to find its way under first-year head coach Matt Eberflus. The end result? A 49-29 Dallas win in October 2022 that left Chicago searching for answers on defense while also leaving it with hope about its quarterback.

Dallas came out swinging, scoring touchdowns on its first four drives of the game — something the franchise hadn’t done since 2014. Quarterback Dak Prescott, back from a fractured thumb that had sidelined him earlier in the season, looked comfortable from the jump. He opened the scoring with a 7-yard rushing touchdown and added two more through the air, including a strike to CeeDee Lamb. Behind him, the Cowboys turned what had been one of the league’s worst third-down offenses into a strength, converting their first six chances and finishing 9-for-11 overall.

The Bears did their best to respond, leaning on their running game as they had all season. Khalil Herbert ripped off 99 yards and a touchdown, while David Montgomery chipped in 53. Fields added 60 rushing yards of his own to go with one of his sharpest passing days as a pro. He completed 17 of 23 throws for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, finishing with a career-best passer rating of 120. Both of his 100-plus ratings at that point had come in the four games leading up to Dallas, signaling that his confidence in the passing game was growing.

But while the Bears showed offensive life, an offensive breakdown defined the afternoon. Midway through the third quarter, with Chicago trailing by just five and gaining momentum, Montgomery fumbled after a short reception. Dallas pass rusher Micah Parsons scooped up the loose ball and went to the ground. For a split second, it looked like the Bears had avoided disaster. Instead, Fields vaulted over Parsons without touching him down. Parsons realized he was free, scrambled to his feet, and sprinted 36 yards for his first career touchdown. The play instantly swung the game back in Dallas’ favor.

Fields acknowledged afterward that he simply made the wrong decision.

“You’re always gonna have ups and downs in the game,” Fields said, via ESPN. ” You’ve just got to keep fighting.”

To his credit, he bounced back with a touchdown drive capped by a 10-yard pass to Cole Kmet, but by then, the damage was done. Pollard put the game away with a 54-yard touchdown run — his third score of the day — finishing with a career-high in rushing yards on just 14 carries.

By the time it was over, Dallas had piled up 442 yards of offense and its highest point total of the season. Chicago, meanwhile, walked away with its fourth 200-yard rushing performance of the year but also the realization that its run defense needed major improvement.

Now, nearly two years later, the Bears and Cowboys are set to meet again — this time at Soldier Field. Much has changed for both franchises since that 2022 matchup. Fields is gone, the Bears have retooled their roster on both sides of the ball, and Dallas has continued to chase a deeper playoff run with Prescott at the helm, but Parsons is gone.
