High school sports weekly wrap-up: Local volleyball players rank highly

You won’t find many, if any, high school sports in which local athletes and teams are as dominant as they are in girls volleyball.

Through the first third of the season of the season, statewide individual statistical leaderboards on MaxPreps.com certainly reflect that local dominance.

    Among those local standouts, Roosevelt’s multi-talented Braelyn Bailey is second in Class 4A in kills (137) behind Gypsum junior Riley Weatherred (179), while playing 10 fewer sets this season than has Weatherred. Bailey has the Rough Riders off to a 6-2 start after an exhilarating 3-2 win Thursday night against Thompson Valley.

    Bailey’s junior teammate, Kinsey Wells, is 12th in 4A in assists (167), one spot behind University sophomore Kenley Rudiger (171).

    Windsor junior Quinn Sholder has been a defensive force at the net for the Wizards (7-3) this season. She is second in 4A in blocks with 34, behind Monument junior Anna Sletten (38).

    Northridge junior Sophia Carbajal is fourth in 4A in blocks (32).

    Eaton senior Madi Smith is third in 3A in kills (144) behind Montezuma-Cortez junior TessaMercedes Jackson (158) and Alamosa senior Aubrey Rothermich (156). Smith has the Reds off to an 9-1 start.

    Smith’s senior teammate Addison Corder is tied for ninth in 3A in blocks (22). Eaton senior setter Trinity Salberg is 11th in assists (174).

    Platte Valley senior Megan Hunt stepped in at setter for the Broncos, replacing longtime starter Lauryn Uyemura, who graduated this past school year. Hunt has adapted nicely. She’s seventh in 3A in assists with 215. Hunt is also fifth in 3A in aces (34).

    Dayspring Christian senior Ashley Teele is tied for 13th in 2A in kills with 84. Her sophomore Eagles teammate Addy Konzek is third in 2A in assists (189).

    Highland junior Leah Varra is tied for 12th in 2A in aces with 26.

    Prairie senior Tanna Bailey is seventh in 1A in kills with 91. She is also third in 1A in aces with 29 and third in blocks with 28. She has the Mustangs off to an 8-0 start.

    Bailey’s senior teammate Nicole Ludgate leads 1A in assists with 258. She is also 14th in aces (23) and 14th in blocks (18). Prairie junior Hanna Kugler is tied for ninth in 1A in blocks (19) and in kills (89).

    Briggsdale freshman Alana Sullivan is 10th in 1A in digs with 120. Her sophomore teammate Mckinzee Slinger is tied for 11th in digs (118).

    High rankings

    Local athletes aren’t just excelling at an individual level.

    In the latest round of CHSAANow.com rankings in girls volleyball, softball and boys soccer, eight local teams sit in their respective top 10.

    The rankings are based on CHSAA’s Seeding Index, which averages each team’s rating using the CHSAA RPI system and MaxPreps.com rankings.

    Seeding Index rankings haven’t been released yet for other fall sports, including football.

    Rising Greeley Central is fourth in the latest 4A rankings, as the Wildcats program has ascended to unprecedented heights.

    Greeley Central sits at 6-0 overall after a 10-0 win against fellow local program Frontier Academy.

    Eaton is the top-ranked team in girls volleyball, sitting at 9-1 after a 3-0 win against Sterling on Thursday. The Reds’ only loss came in their season opener Aug. 26 against fellow local powerhouse Windsor.

    Speaking of the Wizards, Windsor (9-3) is fourth in the 4A girls volleyball rankings. Unbeaten University (7-0) is eighth in 4A. The Bulldogs face a big test on their home court Tuesday against aforementioned Eaton.

    Windsor Charter (9-4) is ranked 10th in 3A girls volleyball.

    On the diamond

    As for softball, Windsor has risen to the top spot in 4A. The Wizards sat at 13-1 heading into a Friday afternoon matchup against another strong local team, Greeley West (7-7).

    Three-time defending champion Eaton (13-3) is the top-ranked team in 3A, one spot ahead of longtime rival and fellow contender University (15-2). The Reds play host to the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Oct. 2.

    Eaton and University have combined to win five of the past six 3A state titles, with the Reds claiming four of those.
