Vista Medical Center East in suburban Waukegan will end “certain” maternity, Obstetrics and Gynecology services next month, a statement from the city of Waukegan sent to NBC Chicago said, with city officials saying they are “concerned” by the decision.
“These services are not only vital to the health and safety of women and families in our community, but they are also fundamental to ensuring that all residents have access to quality, local healthcare at some of life’s most critical moments,” the statement read in part.
According to a report from the Lake-McHenry County Scanner, the hospital will be shutting down its labor and delivery services starting Oct. 28. The community hospital announced the news to staff Thursday, the report said, citing a “comprehensive internal review” of patient needs in Lake County.
The city of Waukegan’s statement said it was discussing the hospital’s decision with leadership and Lake County health officials “to understand the full impact of this decision and to explore every available option to support our community.”

“Our priority is to ensure that women and families are not left without access to the essential care they need, whether that means strengthening partnerships with neighboring providers, expanding public health outreach, or advocating for resources at the county, state, federal level,” the statement said.
Vista East Medical Center and the Illinois Department of Health did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
The move comes as the community hospital earlier this year temporarily made changes to hours of operations for its catheter lab, which is used for patients experiencing cardiac emergencies, like heart attacks.
At the time, Vista Health System issued a statement to NBC Chicago saying the temporary changes were due to a nationwide shortage of healthcare professionals.
“We are not eliminating care — we are strengthening it by ensuring patients receive treatment from a well-supported, fully staffed, and expertly trained team,” the statement read, in part.
In January of 2025, the hospital furloughed approximately 70 employees for at least six weeks, citing financial reasons. Several weeks later, a patient died after being found of the roof of the hospital, with an autopsy determining she suffered hypothermia as a result of cold exposure.
In February of 2024, Vista Medical Center East had its designation as a trauma center revoked by state officials for not having appropriate blood supply and clinical staff available for patients.
The hospital, in northeast Lake County, was purchased by California-based private equity group American Healthcare Systems in July of 2023, assuming $15 million in debt. As of September 2025, American Healthcare Systems’ website was no longer operational.
