Although the news broke while Colbert taped The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he did not address Kimmel's fate on the Sept. 17 episode of his CBS show. Fast-forward to the Thursday, Sept. 18 episode of The Late Show, and the 61-year-old sent a clear message of support to his fellow late-night host.

“I’ve seen some extraordinarily vile responses to this from both sides of the political spectrum," Kimmel said on Sept. 11 during his initial response to Kirk’s death. "Some people are cheering this, which is something I won’t ever understand.”
