PFA steps in to intervene after Raheem Sterling image sparks furore over treatment of Chelsea duo

The PFA have approached Chelsea over the training regime of Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi, talkSPORT understands.

PFA chief executive Maheta Molango has stepped in to ensure FIFA‘s rules over players isolated from the first team are being adhered to.

It is understood Molango has sought assurances that Sterling and Disasi are able to train at the best level despite being frozen out of manager Enzo Maresca‘s squad.

It comes after Sterling posted pictures of himself at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground at 8pm at night.

Chelsea were approached for comment and it’s believed they feel they have satisfied any PFA requirements.

FIFA have strict regulations when it comes to the treatment of players who have been isolated from a squad, with certain circumstances considered ‘abusive conduct’.

Both Sterling and Disasi are part of the Blues’ Premier League squad this season, but they have not featured at all.

Sterling’s last appearance in the top-flight came in May when he started for Arsenal at the end of his loan period.

Meanwhile, Disasi played his most recent game in April whilst on loan at Aston Villa, where he made 10 appearances.

The pair have not been involved in any of Chelsea’s first-team training sessions, forming part of a ‘bomb squad’ at the club.

They were tipped for moves away from Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window, but nothing materialised.

And it leaves them in limbo until the January window opens, with no gametime expected in the months up to then.

    Missing men

Chelsea manager Maresca discussed the situation with Sterling and Disasi last week, making an astonishing admission.

He revealed that he hadn’t even seen them since the start of the new season, due to them not working with the first team.

“They are Chelsea players, but at the moment they are training separately and the plan is to continue in this way,” he said.

“Since the season started, I haven’t seen either of them.

“I haven’t seen Axel or Raheem. They train at a different time and on a different pitch.

“I haven’t seen them since the start of the season.”

‘They will treat you like garbage’

talkSPORT host and former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has discussed the poor treatment of Sterling and Disasi.

He called for the PFA to intervene, which they now have, whilst also looking at the tough situation from a players’ perspective.

“I’ve seen it at Aston Villa with players,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“I remember under Paul Lambert, there was a bomb squad that had to go and train together on their own.

“Players felt like, ‘Oh, I can’t speak to the bomb squad group. Don’t want to get caught speaking to them.’ It makes you feel so low.

“For Raheem Sterling, yes, last season wasn’t at his best. 17 Premier League games for Arsenal, only four starts, no goals, two assists.

“But he’s only 30, Raheem Sterling now.

“82 England caps, 20 goals, four Premier League titles, five League Cups, one FA Cup. And he’s training on his own, being treated so badly by the manager.

“This is the problem that I have with some fans, because they moan about players like [Alexander] Isak, like [Yoane] Wissa, wanting to leave.

“But when a club doesn’t want you, they will treat you like absolute garbage. They will make you train at this time. They will make you sit in the changing room on your own, away from your teammates.

“What about Raheem Sterling’s mental health?

“What about [Axel] Disasi’s mental health?”
