Training Camp Opens! Cap Chaos, Contention Cycles, Kopitar Calling It? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks 2025 season begins today! It’s time to put the offseason back in the drawer and get ready to watch some actual, legitimate hockey. In Chicago, the Blackhawks open a season the likes of which we haven’t seen in nearly two decades. The roster is going to be significantly younger, and they’re handing the keys to the prospects we’ve been talking about for the past couple years. The first wave is hitting the ice, and that’s exciting.

And Wyatt Kaiser got his contract done just in time! How about that!

Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times wrote about the seven storylines he’ll be watching, which includes whether or not Kevin Korchinski makes the team. I don’t think we’re talking about him enough. He’s still young and incredibly talented. Defensemen take time to develop.

Mark Lazerus and Scott Powers at The Athletic also wrote about what they’re watching as the Blackhawks’ camp opens. They include their early projection for an opening night lineup — one that includes Korchinski, Sam Rinzel and Artyom Levshunov on the blue line. For those wondering, they have Ryan Donato and André Burakovsky on the Connor Bedard‘s wings.

Yesterday I shared my three big questions that need to be answered by the Blackhawks in training camp, including Bedard’s line and how the blue line shakes out. We’ve also got everything you need to know about training camp in one easy location. Bookmark that one, folks!

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 16, 2025 Again: Bedard’s contract situation isn’t something to worry about.

"We're going to get it done when it gets done and I'm excited to be here for a long time."Connor Bedard has made it clear he wants to be in Chicago for a long time, but isn't in a rush to get an extension done. #ChicagoLead pic.twitter.com/Wr2H13ZD4V

    — Blackhawks on CHSN (@CHSN_Blackhawks) September 17, 2025 The folks at The Athletic went deep-dive with another interesting read that considered where all 32 NHL teams are in their contention cycle. The Blackhawks, Sharks and Ducks are in the “win later” area. I will say it’s better to be there than in the “window closed” red boxes. This is a really good read.

    — Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) September 17, 2025 This is a fascinating piece from James Mirtle at The Athletic. With the NHL’s salary cap going up as quickly as it will in the coming years, there’s a sense around the NHL that there could be… chaos. He builds the foundation for the discussion that the recently flat cap has kept player salaries down, which has helped most of the star players in the league stay put. Couple the cap with the potential for injury, longer-term deals have been preferred by the biggest names. But we’re starting to see that change — which excites fans and the media alike.

In just the past 15 months, we’ve witnessed Steven Stamkos, [Brad] Marchand and Mikko Rantanen all leave the organizations they were drafted by — Tampa Bay, Boston and Colorado, respectively — amid disputes that basically boiled down to wanting bigger pieces of the pie as the cap gets set to jump nearly 30 percent by 2027-28.

With Mitch Marner later leaving a toxic situation in Toronto to go to the Vegas Golden Knights, it’s likely that the NHL has experienced more star turnover in this brief window than at any other similar timeframe in its salary cap era.

We’ve been waiting for more player movement chaos for many, many years. This could be a new era of the NHL — and @mirtle can't wait. t.co/uiunBkjOgP

    — The Athletic (@TheAthletic) September 16, 2025 Sam Rinzel got a mention in this good look at sleepers in fantasy hockey drafts. He’s probably going to quarterback the Blackhawks’ top power play unit. And, if the end of last year is any indication, could log a lot of minutes on the blue line. Want a Blackhawks player on your roster late in the draft? Rinzel could be a smart pick with your heart and your head.

    — Shayna (@shaynagoldman_) September 16, 2025 The OHL shared the results of their preseason media poll, and there’s a lot in there with Blackhawks ties. Three teams with Blackhawks prospects — Brantford (Marek Vanacker, Parker Holmes), Kitchener (Jack Pridham) and Windsor (AJ Spellacy) — are predicted to win their respective divisions. One of Spellacy’s teammates, Ethan Belchetz, was one of the two players tied for the most votes to be the best 2026 draft prospect in the league. And the two teams predicted to win their sides of the league and meet in the championship round: Brantford and Windsor. Brantford was the runaway pick to win the whole thing (83 percent of the votes).

    — Ontario Hockey League (@OHLHockey) September 16, 2025 The IceHogs are running it back with their black Screw City look this year. I like it a lot. Might need to pick one up.

    — Rockford IceHogs (@goicehogs) September 16, 2025 My understanding is that future Hall of Fame center Anze Kopitar will announce this will be his final season on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles. John Hoven reported that would be the case earlier this summer, and the Kings will make a “major announcement” later today.

    — Dennis Bernstein (@DennisTFP) September 17, 2025 The Flames signed Mikael Backlund to a two-year extension with a $3.25M AAV. The Blues signed forward Nathan Walker to a two-year contract extension with an $887,500 AAV. USA Hockey announced the full coaching staff for the 2026 Winter Olympics: Mike Sullivan is the head coach with David Quinn, John Hynes and John Tortorella as his assistants. Mike Buckley will be the goaltending coach. It’s kinda wild to think Quinn coached both Brady Tkachuk and Jake Oettinger at Boston University back in the day and will probably get to work with them again in this tournament. Here’s hoping he considers adding another BU alum, Alex Vlasic. Frank Nazar will hopefully get a look, too.
