Trump loves the Royal Family – his childhood explains why

Donald Trump’s upbringing can help explain his delight in receiving the Royal treatment as the UK “rolls out the red carpet” to make his historic second state visit memorable, experts have said.

The US President and First Lady were welcomed by the King, the Queen, and the Prince and Princess of Wales at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

The Trumps joined the Royals for a scenic carriage ride to the castle, accompanied by a colourful Sovereign’s Escort of the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

The scale and spectacle of the military ceremonial on show for Trump was unprecedented, with 22 half-companies of personnel lining the carriage procession route through the private Windsor estate to the castle.

The Trumps met the King in front of Victoria House, which has never been used before for a visit in modern times, as royal gun salutes were fired.

Trump appeared to tell Catherine she is “so beautiful” and affectionately placed his hand on the arms of both William and Charles.

Dr David Andersen, associate professor in US politics at Durham University, said Trump’s “fascination with the Royal Family” goes back to his upbringing in New York City.

Trump’s mother was born in Scotland and emigrated to the United States in 1930. His father was born in New York City, the son of German immigrants.

Trump was educated at New York Military Academy and earned an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1968.

After finishing university he started his property empire by borrowing money from his father.

As he became a wealthy businessman in his own right, he craved acceptance from elite groups of old-money families in the city, but they never accepted him. He was still considered nouveau riche.

“It really put a chip on his shoulder,” Dr Andersen said. “In the 80s and 90s, he became this playboy millionaire, and part of it seems to be a reaction against the fact that he couldn’t get into these exclusive circles. He started his own circles.”

Trump banded together with other up-and-coming rich businessmen to “party like nobody else can”, he said.

“But he’s always had this pedestal for these rich historic families, and there is no greater example than the British Royal Family: more than 1,000 years of history, 1,000 years of palaces and castles, all the trappings that only royalty provides,” he said.

“The fact that he now gets to rub shoulders with a King – he loves it.”

Scott Lucas, professor of US politics at University College Dublin, said “status and ego” are behind Trump’s love of the Royals.

Although Trump likes to portray himself as “representing the common man” who made his own fortune, he has “always wanted to be part of the elites”, he said.

“He’s got that notoriously prickly ego in terms of others who get more attention,” he said.

Professor Lucas said the state visit has allowed Trump to “bask” in “pomp and circumstance”, with very little politics because the Royal Family will not challenge him on issues.

    ‘King of the US’

The “one thing” the UK has going for it that nowhere else has is the Royal Family, Dr Andersen said.

“It is such an attraction to Trump, and the UK is playing this visit brilliantly,” he said. “A second state visit for an American president is unprecedented, and Trump loves that status. He gets to meet with a second monarch.

“No American president has ever done that, and the way the UK has rolled out the red carpet – bringing him to Windsor Palace, taking the carriage ride to Windsor – there’s all these trappings that you just can’t get in the United States.”

Trump gets hosted by wealthy monarchs in the Middle East, but they “don’t have the history that the UK does”, he said.

“The UK has done a great job in using this to their advantage, and getting Trump happy and pleased with the UK and that can only help them in negotiations on things that Britain cares about, like trade deals and tariff reductions,” Dr Andersen said. “They’re doing a great job of leveraging the President in a way that he’s willing to be leveraged.”

Trump “fashions himself as the king of the US“, Professor Lucas said. The US President will be relishing the media attention and hoping to see them make an equation between the British monarchy and a “wannabe US monarchy”. Fox News has already described a “majestic relationship” between them.

Americans love the Royal Family because they do not have any comparable pomp and circumstance in their own country, he added.

In US culture, the Royals are “very much romanticised” as the country does not have any of the “responsibility” of having its own monarchy, Dr Andersen said.

“Most Americans are raised on Disney movies and fairy tales and all of these things have royal families in them,” he said. “But the United States doesn’t have that, so our closest relations are with Britain.

“For a lot of Americans, the British Royal Family is the cream of the crop, the premier Royal Family in the world. Americans look to the Royal Family in a nostalgic way, to back in the day when we were part of the empire.”
