Deportation flights were grounded for a third day under the Home Office’s stalled scheme to crack down on small boat crossings.
The Government has vowed to fight “vexatious” legal challenges against its “one in, one out” deal with France to deport migrants who have crossed the Channel to come to the UK.
The new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood issued a scathing rebuke, saying that those who had launched last minute appeals against their deportations were “suddenly deciding” that they were victims of modern slavery.
She said she would fight attempts to stop removals and it is understood the Home Office still plans to have people on flights in the coming days.
Mahmood is urgently reviewing the Modern Slavery Act to assess where it is currently open to misuse by those singled out for deportation.
The Home Office is appealing a court decision which delayed the deportation of a man on Tuesday. Officials will appeal against a ruling to allow him two weeks to make a claim he is the victim of modern slavery and should be exempt from the scheme.
“Last minute attempts to frustrate a removal are intolerable, and I will fight them at every step,” Mahmood said.
“Migrants suddenly deciding that they are a modern slave on the eve of their removal, having never made such a claim before, make a mockery of our laws and this country’s generosity.
“I will fight to end vexatious, last-minute claims. I will robustly defend the British public’s priorities in any court. And I will do whatever it takes to secure our border.”
The man had been due to be removed on a flight at 9am on Wednesday but will remain in the UK after a judge granted him a “short period of interim relief”.
Lawyers acting on his behalf said the case “concerns a trafficking claim” and that her client, who alleges he has a gunshot wound in his leg, claims he is vulnerable and faces a risk of “destitution” in France.
