Victoria Beckham needs to tell the truth about Brooklyn in her Netflix documentary

Victoria and David Beckham were once inescapable. Barely a day went by without them covering a gossip magazine, giving tell-all interviews, giggling over their private nicknames, or championing each other’s careers in garish, synchronised outfits.

It’s a wonder it’s taken this long for an in-depth documentary to chart her evolution from Spice Girl to one of the most powerful names in fashion. Netflix has confirmed the docuseries, Victoria Beckham, is set to be released on 9 October. The timing is either unfortunate or a blessing.

The series comes from the same team behind her husband’s Netflix docuseries and the director of Michelle Obama’s Becoming. It will be slick, elegant, and hopefully capture Victoria’s underrated sense of humour, which so often is forgotten as one of the driving forces behind the success of brand Beckham. But will she be honest? Will she address the elephant in the room? Will she talk about the highly publicised fallout with her eldest son, Brooklyn?

The Beckhams are as close to royalty as you can get without an inherited title. Their empire was not only built on David’s legendary football career and Victoria’s transformation from Posh Spice to purveyor of posh frocks – the Beckham brand has always been rooted in family.

Their idyllic dynamic was aspirational for a devoted fanbase. For over two decades, there wasn’t a single crack big enough to shatter the illusion of perfection at chez Beckham. Even David’s alleged affair with former personal assistant Rebecca Loos did little to dent their image.

But now, the first of their children to walk away from the family fold has challenged that perception. Tensions have been rumoured ever since Brooklyn married heiress Nicola Peltz in 2022. But it became undeniable when he reportedly skipped all three of his father’s 50th birthday celebrations and didn’t acknowledge them publicly at all. The rift deepened last month when Brooklyn and Nicola renewed their vows, three years after tying the knot, without a single Beckham in attendance.

Victoria cannot credibly talk about her family – which will surely be the emotional core of the Netflix series – without addressing the fracture within. More than that, she’d be foolish not to.

It’s been confirmed Brooklyn will appear in the series in some capacity, which was largely filmed before the estrangement became too obvious to deny. It’s doubtful he’ll talk about being famous in the womb and the impact that had on his mental wellbeing – or if he’ll even speak at all.

Forget David, Victoria is the real star of Netflix's Beckham

Victoria’s film arrives two years on from her husband’s documentary, also on Netflix. Beckham was always going to be a colossal success, but it exceeded all expectations. It wasn’t always flattering – the revelation that David decided to move the family to Spain to further his career without consulting his wife was quite something – but it felt authentic. The exception being his skirting around the alleged affair; rather than taking any accountability or mentioning her by name, we just heard how it affected his family, particularly Victoria.

But the Loos scandal was over 20 years ago. It is easier for David to gloss over an alleged affair that’s been largely forgotten than it will be for Victoria to ignore the gossip that’s been curiously unfolding this summer.

Much of the series was filmed as she prepared for another gruelling Paris Fashion Week show. Her clothing line has earned its place in the fashion world, but it’s haemorrhaged money since its launch in 2008 – it would seem the truth about running a business isn’t quite as glamorous as putting together a fashion show.

When it comes to Brooklyn, Victoria has the excuse that the series was filmed when he was still obliged to smile with the family for every photo opportunity. She could argue that any familial tension that has happened since the cameras stopped rolling has no place in the documentary.

The Beckhams have got this far by keeping their cards close to their chest and we’re not owed the most intimate details of their lives. But if they’re going to further their brand power by feeding us two glossy Netflix docuseries – one for each spouse – then at the very least, they should tell us the truth about what’s really going on.
