Game Balls (Sept. 8-13): Blaskowski, Lamb come up big against rivals

The fall high school sports season is in full swing with plenty going on locally.

Here’s a look at some of local standout athletes and moments from this past week:

    Athletes of the week

    Braelyn Bailey, Roosevelt girls volleyball

Bailey, a senior, was a force in Roosevelt’s 3-1 road win against Severance on Thursday. She had 22 kills, three aces, a block and nine digs. The Rough Riders went 2-0 on the week. In their other win, a 3-0 victory against Greeley Central on Sept. 9, Bailey had 10 kills, four aces and 10 digs.

    Max Blaskowski, Eaton football

Blaskowski, a senior, was a popular target for senior quarterback Andrew Loyd in Eaton’s 40-7 win against longtime crosstown rival Platte Valley on Friday in Kersey. He caught five passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

    Maya Burkholder, Northridge softball

Burkholder, a senior, again came through big for the Grizzlies, hitting 1 for 2 with four RBI and a triple in Northridge’s 12-0 four-inning home win Sept. 9 against crosstown rival Greeley Central.

    Adrian Czyszczon, Windsor football

Czyszczon a senior running back, continued to rack up impressive rushing totals in the Wizards’ 23-0 road win against Montbello on Saturday. He carried the ball 28 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns as Windsor improved to 3-0. He also caught a 15-yard pass.

    Elijah Elder, Highland football

Elder, a senior, racked up a season and career high in rushing yards Friday in the Huskies’ 47-20 home game against Wiggins. He carried the ball 20 times for 156 yards. He also caught two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.

    Hawkins Flanagan, Dayspring Christian football

Flanagan, a sophomore quarterback, was the front man for a strong Eagles offense in a 56-6 Dayspring home win over Hayden on Saturday. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 30 yard and a touchdown. He made an even bigger impact with his feet, running the ball 12 times for 169 yards and three touchdowns.

    Jax Lamb, Greeley West football

Points were certainly at a premium in Greeley West’s 7-0 win against Northridge on Friday. But, Lamb, a sophomore, came through with a big score when it counted the most. Lamb’s 18-yard scamper into the end zone with 3:46 left provided the only points of the defensive-minded game. Lamb finished with 86 yards on 16 carries.

    Milo Pascual, Roosevelt football

Pascual, a senior running back, paced the Rough Riders’ offense in their 40-22 home win against Ponderosa on Friday. He had 137 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

    Isabella Ramsey, Eaton softball

Ramsey, a junior, had likely the best week of her career in a pair of dominant wins against Sterling and Forge Christian. In a 17-0 win Sept. 9 against the Tigers, she hit 2 for 3 with four RBI, a run and two doubles. In a 13-2 victory Thursday against Forge Christian, she went 3 for 3 with four RBI and two home runs.

    Alexis Rocha, Valley softball

Rocha, a sophomore, was a menace at the plate in the Vikings’ 15-3 win against Wray/Yuma on Saturday. She hit 3 for 5 with six RBI and two doubles.

    Katie Thomas, Severance softball

She hit .769 (10 of 13) with 10 RBI, five runs, four doubles and a triple. In the circle, she allowed zero earned runs, while striking out 19 and walking four in 12 innings.

    Moment of the week

While much of the attention within the Greeley prep football scene Friday was centered on District 6 Stadium where Greeley West scored an exhilarating win against crosstown rival Northridge, the other big Greeley school scored a notable victory of its own. Greeley Central went on the road to defeat Adams City 14-0, which was the Wildcats’ first win of the fall. Central improved to 1-2.

    Quote of the week

“I can’t put it into words. I’ve been here for four years, and I feel like all I’ve done is lose. But to be able to lead my team in good hands, it’s a feeling I can’t describe. I’m holding back tears. We won. We won.”

    — Greeley West senior Jed Hicks, after the Spartans’ 7-0 football win against Northridge on Friday
