The world just lost another legend, as beloved actor and director Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.
The New York Times reported that Redford died at his home near Provo, Utah, though as of this time, no cause of death has been released. His publicist, Cindi Berger gave a statement to the publication indicating he died in his sleep. The statement reads:
"Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."
Redford got his start in Hollywood starring in the film War Hunt in 1962, but his career truly skyrocketed after his roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and The Sting in 1973, for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
He also took on the legendary role of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby in 1974.

Other memorable movie roles include All the President's Men, The Natural, Out of Africa, Legal Eagles, and Sneakers.
In addition to his expansive acting career, Redford also made his directorial debut in 1980 with Ordinary People. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He was also the founder of the famed Sundance Film Festival.
Although in 2018 Redford announced he was retiring from acting, he told People that he actually regretted making that statement, saying, "I think it was a mistake to say that I was retiring because you never know."
He made the comment at the premiere of The Old Man and the Gun. He added, "I shouldn’t have said that because it draws attention away from the film."
