Taylor Swift says she had to make sure no one was losing their job when she agreed to write a chart-topping song for Toy Story 5.
The 14-time Grammy winner made the revelation at a recent screening of the film and Q&A session in New York City with director Andrew Stanton.
Swift, 36, composed and recorded “I Knew It, I Knew You” for the closing credits, and it became her 15th number one song on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, she topped the chart again with “Patient Zero” on October 10. Only The Beatles (20), Mariah Carey (19), and Elvis Presley (18) have more number-one songs on the chart.
Swift was initially reluctant to commit to the song because of her busy schedule, and during the Q&A, she recalled a meeting with Disney about the music.
“I was repeatedly asking, ‘I know that it took me a couple months to come back to this project. Be honest: did you guys replace me?’” she said. “‘I don’t want to kick somebody off of this project that you reached out to after [me] because I understand, but I’m not in the business of doing that.’”
The “Shake It Off” singer was assured no one else was considered for the song.
“I found out that there was no other person on your mood board,” she said to Stanton, 60. “Everybody said, ‘No, we just decided there wasn’t going to be an end credit song [if you didn’t do it].’”
After attending an early advance screening of the film, Swift wrote, produced, and recorded the tune within eight hours with her long-time collaborator Jack Antonoff. It was like a dream come true because she had wanted to write music for the franchise since watching Toy Story in 1995 at the age of five.
For her new song, she drew inspiration from a character not in the original movie.
“When I saw this brilliant film that Andrew made, I realized exactly why he knew I would love it,” she explained. “It’s centered around Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack), who’s my favorite character, and it deals with female friendship.”
