PENFIELD, N.Y. – A scheduled blast at Dolomite Quarry on Whalen Road in Penfield caused a shower of large rocks to rain down on nearby Shadow Pines pickleball courts and playground Thursday morning.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but several cars and playground equipment were damaged.
Joel Barnett, who was playing pickleball at the time, said, “We just saw rocks that were flying down from above, one hit the court, one hit the playground and I ran for the shelter.”
Barnett said he later found a large rock embedded in the ground, describing it as “a little bit smaller than a basketball.”
John Szulgit, whose sunroof was shattered by the falling rocks, said, “Unfortunately, it made a direct hit right on the sunroof and shattered the sunroof so I’m just waiting for the sheriff to come take a report.”
Steve Gendron, who was walking in the park, said, “This is the one that landed on the court right next to me and almost hit me, at first I didn’t know what happened.”
