Nate Bargatze Launches 77th Emmy Awards With Monologue Heavy on Laughs

From sold-out arenas to Hollywood’s biggest stage, Nate Bargatze launched the 77th Emmy Awards with an opening heavy on the laughs and filled with riffs on television and celebrity culture, all from the perspective of Bargatze’s regular guy persona.

The comedian was joined by Saturday Night Live stars Bowen Yang, James Austin Johnson, and Mikey Day (whom he first worked with in October 2024 when he hosted the late-night comedy sketch series) for the show’s previously filmed opener. There, the foursome humorously explored television's history, and the skit offered a witty yet straightforward look at how the medium has evolved over the years and how far it still has to go.

During the Emmys' live opener, Bargatze declared that each winner would have just 45 seconds to state their acceptance speech. He announced a $100,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but with a twist: if a performer stayed within the 45-second limit, the full amount would be donated.

However, for every second a winner went over, $1,000 would be deducted from the total. If they came in under the time limit, more money would be added to the overall total.

Nate Bargatze quipped to CBS News that he only began preparing for his 2025 Emmy Awards hosting gig the week ahead of the event. "I was like trying to think of like how, which way you want to go, and it's like … even we've had stuff written that I think was a little more roast stuff, and then it's like after you think about it a couple of days, I'm like 'nah let's go back another way.' We have some fun stuff though, that's planned."

He added, "I'm used to performing in front of live people, not an audience like this of all the people that you know. So, it will be fun to get in there, get on stage, get that first joke, hear that first laugh, and then just get running and just really make your own of it."

Bargatze concluded that the experience of hosting the Emmy Awards has been a "dream." He added, "You kind of dream of hosting some kind of award show, and it's very flattering to even get asked to do it."

Where Nate Bargatze Fits in Emmy Host History

Emmy hosts need to be quick, clever, and ready to create standout moments that carry the show forward. Comedians are often tasked with helming the show, relying on their sharp wit and ability to adapt on the fly.

Nate Bargatze will likely connect with viewers, who may relate to his fish-out-of-water perspective of the world as reported by The Los Angeles Times. His laid-back humor and everyman charm could provide a refreshing contrast to the evening's glamour.

The ability to work on the fly seems to be how some hosts have successfully navigated this job in the past. Actor Neil Patrick Harris was asked to host the Emmys twice, in 2009 and 2013, incorporating song and dance numbers and relying on his charm and ability to pivot to keep the show moving.

Jimmy Kimmel (2012, 2016, 2020) was given the gig three times. One of his standout moments was during the 2020 virtual Emmys, when Kimmel's ability to balance humor during the COVID-19 pandemic was praised, and Variety called it a "surprising triumph."

Stephen Colbert, host of the 2017 Emmys, infused his opening monologue with political humor, while Conan O’Brien, who helmed the show in 2002 and 2005, showcased a mix of silliness and sincerity.

All eyes will be on Nate Bargatze as viewers wait to see how his unique style sets the tone for one of Hollywood's biggest nights.
