Shania Twain explained to PEOPLE how she supported Jon Bon Jovi through his vocal cord surgery.
Bon Jovi needed a vocal fold medialization procedure in June 2022, something Twain had gone through four years prior. So, she was happy to offer her advice to the 1980s rock icon.
Twain met the New Jersey native on an international flight to Europe, with Bon Jovi telling the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" singer she had a reputation for "being the hardest-working artist in the industry."
When they met, he was suffering from “laryngeal nerve problems,” and she had already been through the same due to Lyme disease.
"He just called me up and said, ‘Share everything you know about how you got back singing live after nerve atrophy in the voice,’” Twain told PEOPLE.
She explained to the outlet how she helped the "You Give Love A Bad Name" singer with his health issues. “I shared my surgeon’s information with him, my experience with him, and I encouraged him to weigh up all the scenarios. I told him that it worked for me, and that I was honest. I think he really appreciated that, was able to take it all on board.”

“It’s an open-throat surgery, and you have to be awake. I said, ‘I just have to be honest with you because if you’re going into this, you’re going to hear it from the surgeon anyway, but you might as well hear it from somebody who’s been through it,'” she explained.
Twain admits she doesn't know many other singers who underwent the same surgery as her and Bon Jovi. She told the outlet it was usually an injury suffered by “boxers” or “cancer patients where they have to remove tumors near those nerves and in the throat, neck, or tongue, mouth area.”
Twain also revealed that her voice "has never been the same" since she underwent the surgery eight years ago, but now it is a "gravelly" voice with more "rasp" and "character."
[My voice is] different, I embrace it,” she says. “I’m grateful that I can sing, I can hold a note, and I can be loud and proud,” the 60-year-old concluded.
In his 2024 Disney+ docuseries, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, he described the country singer as his “spirit sister” after she helped him through his ordeal. “Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I'd be out there a lot sooner than I have been. She says, ‘Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.' And so, I couldn't wait to get the operation.”
