6 Incredible Places To Practice Yoga That Aren’t a Studio

After a childhood spent barely moving my body because I was horribly uncoordinated and very bad at sports, I finally discovered yoga when I was 22, and was immediately hooked. I've never taken easily to any kind of choreography (did I mention I'm uncoordinated?), but once I'd taken about 10 classes, I got the moves down and never looked back. It was so calming and invigorating, and I loved the new flexibility and openness I started to feel in my body.I went on to become a certified yoga instructor in 2013, and I still do yoga a few times a week at my local studio. While there are plenty of great yoga classes on YouTube, I'm very much partial to the in-person options. I love the community feeling I get from moving and breathing with others, so any time I'm traveling, I always look for a yoga studio in the city I'm visiting.Related: The Simple Tweak Yoga Instructors Say Can Make You Way More Flexible

That's why I was so excited when Cakebread Cellars, a winery based in Napa, California, invited me to do yoga in a vineyard as part of their Wellness and Wine program. As a Northern California native, I had long admired the absolute beauty of those vineyards an hour from where I grew up, so I jumped at the opportunity. I'll share more about the details of my experience below, but that got me thinking: What are some other cool, unexpected places to do yoga that aren't in a studio? I dove in and realized I'd already done some of them—and can absolutely recommend those too.?SIGN UP for Parade’s health newsletter with expert-approved tips, healthy eats, exercises, news & more to help you stay healthy & feel your best self?

6 Unexpected Places To Practice Yoga

    1. In a vineyard

You saw this one coming, but I absolutely recommend practicing yoga in a vineyard. Napa Valley is hot in the summer, but the advantage of it being so close to the Bay Area is that the morning fog keeps things cooler until midday. The air was crisp but not cold as we moved through downward-facing dogs and hip openers, and I've never had such a relaxing savasana. There was wine to follow the wellness (as the program title suggests), which was paired with food made by Cakebread's chef from the winery's on-site garden. It was a little too early in the day for me to be drinking alcohol, but the overall experience was relaxing and fulfilling.

Have you heard of goat yoga? I can't say I've yet had the pleasure of practicing yoga with a bunch of bleating animals, but I've heard great things about NY Goat Yoga, which offers everything from kid-friendly goat yoga and pizza classes to full-blown retreats. Those who have done it have called it an "adorable, chaotic experience in the best way." I'm seriously considering taking a weekend trip there.Related: Exactly How Many Squats You Need To Do a Week To Tone Your Butt

    3. On a paddleboard

Standup paddleboard (SUP) yoga is another great option, especially if you want to get a great core workout in. Maintaining your balance on a paddleboard already requires a lot of core activation, and moving through yoga poses is even more of a challenge for your abs. Plus, SUP yoga classes are done on water, so they're pretty much always hosted in beautiful locations. That certainly doesn't hurt.

    4. On a rooftop

As a New York City dweller, there is no shortage of rooftop yoga classes available. One great bonus is that bugs can't fly that high, and a buggy yoga class isn't exactly relaxing. A lot of these classes are hosted at sunset or in the early mornings, and they're so energizing and beautiful.

Here's a photo of me doing yoga on my own rooftop in 2017!

Doing yoga before a flight is always a good idea. You're gearing up to be trapped in an uncomfortable seat for hours, and the pressure changes can be hard on your body. Certain airports actually have yoga rooms, one being SFO, which I fly out of all the time. If you find yourself in an airport with a yoga room, I highly recommend taking advantage of it.

    6. On horseback

I'm going to preface this by saying I will absolutely never do yoga on horseback, but equine yoga, or EquiYoga, is a thing. It's typically done in the saddle (so on the horse), but there are options to practice on the ground next to the horse if you're more comfortable with that. As mentioned, I will be opting out of equine yoga altogether, but I respect those horse lovers who want to dabble in it!
