After only two games, the Colorado State football team is on the first of two scheduled bye weeks during the 2025 season, and the Rams have used the time to reset and evaluate personnel.
The Rams are coming off a come-from-behind victory over FCS Northern Colorado last Saturday, a game they were heavily favored in but yet had to score a late fourth-quarter touchdown and survive a last-second replay review to claim a 21-17 win.
CSU head coach Jay Norvell was critical of his team following the loss, especially quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, which has prompted Norvell to keep all options open regarding that position.
“Brayden missed some reads, and we’ve got to get to the bottom of that,” Norvell said following Saturday’s game. “The plays that he missed reads on were not difficult plays, and so we’ll look at that. We’ve got to get him playing comfortable, and he’s got to make more plays in the passing game.”

“I just think it’s just fundamentals and execution,” Norvell said Wednesday. “Brayden wasn’t as focused early in the game, didn’t start very well. He’s just got to get off to a good start and get his footwork going and read it out and give his guys a chance. We’ve just gone back to our base fundamentals.”
Fowler-Nicolosi has been CSU’s starting quarterback since early in the 2023 season, when he took over for Clay Millen prior to the team’s rivalry game against Colorado at Folsom Field.
He passed for 367 and three touchdowns in the Buffs’ double-overtime win and went on to pass for 3,460 yards and 22 touchdowns that season. But his numbers were down last year, and against the Bears on Saturday he passed for only 132 yards and an interception, although he did rush for the winning touchdown.
On Wednesday, both Fowler-Nicolosi and backup Jackson Brousseau got reps in with the first-team offense.
“We’re looking at every option right now in practice,” Norvell said. “We’re giving JB some reps with the one’s. Brayden’s getting some reps as well. Everybody’s got to continue to improve.”
Brousseau has appeared in two games for the Rams — the team’s lopsided season-opening loss to Texas last season and in a blowout win over Utah Tech in 2023.
Meanwhile, Fowler-Nicolosi welcomed the bye week following his performance and took responsibility for it.
“There’s a lot to learn, and however quickly I have to do that, that’s how quickly I’m going to do it,” he said following Saturday’s win. “But thank God, I’ve got two weeks to do it, I guess. There’s a lot to watch and learn from this game, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

Norvell was also critical of the team’s receivers following the game and has placed an emphasis on that group as well as protecting the ball.
He was happy with the how the Rams played the run game on both sides of the ball against the Bears, as well as the physicality of the defense.
He also said he liked the timing of the bye week as it gives his players and coaches an opportunity to focus on fundamentals and work out the kinks they saw against UNC.
“I like having a bye in September,” Norvell said. “Just because it gives your team time to work and get continuity together. It is a good week for our guys to catch their breath and polish up some execution.”
The Rams will turn their focus to next week’s opponent, UTSA. The Roadrunners and Rams will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Canvas Stadium. The game will be broadcast on FS1.
