A birthday message from The Colorado Sun

Hear from some of The Sun’s leadership team: Publisher Larry Ryckman, Editor Dana Coffield and our new Chief Operating Officer Lamont Browne, on the state of the organization.

TranscriptLARRY RYCKMAN: Hi, I’m Larry Ryckman, publisher and one of the co-founders here at The Colorado Sun. Thanks. Thanks for joining us here. We’re here to tell you a little bit about The Colorado Sun and what’s going on here and the journey that we’ve been on. I’m here today with Dana Coffield, our editor, and Lamont Browne, our new chief operating officer.

So it was seven years ago this week, that a small group of us opened up our laptops and hit a few buttons and launched The Colorado Sun. And it’s been just a wild journey for us in these past seven years. We started off with ten full-time journalists and zero members, by the way, zero page views, zero supporters.

And today, seven years later, we’ve got a staff of 25. We’ve got 110,000 newsletter subscribers, nearly a million unique visitors to our websites every month. And this is all made possible by the support of generous Coloradans like you, people who care about Colorado and care how and where you get your information from. And we’re just so proud to do this work for you.

And, I want to — you’ll get back to me in a minute — but I want to let Dana talk a little bit about some of the journalism that we do. And, just have a little conversation with you. So thank you so much.DANA COFFIELD: Yeah, Hi, I’m Dana, I’m also a founder and I’m editor of The Colorado Sun. One of the pledges that we made to our supporters seven years ago was that we were going to create a website that reflected the community that we hoped to serve.

And by that, we meant we weren’t going to do a bunch of, you know, “somebody got stabbed in the throat” kind of coverage, and it was going to look more like the things that we felt like the people of Colorado craved and wanted in their news coverage. And so we’ve really stuck with that mission these past seven years.

And I feel like we are on the precipice of being able to expand that even further, with the help of our friends and supporters like you. And so I really appreciate the journey that you’ve allowed us to be on this past seven years and looking forward to the next chapter, too.

    LR: Thank you. Dana.

When we launched seven years ago, we had high hopes, a little bit of anxiety and just a fierce determination to to serve our public.

We knew a lot about journalism, but just a little bit about running a business. We’ve learned a lot of things the hard way, but we’ve also been very fortunate in our friends, including supporters, such as you. A year ago, we were very fortunate to get a $1.4 million grant for the American Journalism Project. It’s a highly respected, national nonprofit that is all about helping organizations such as ours learn how to bolster the business side of our operations so that we can produce more journalism and to hire more journalists to cover our state.

And one of the things that we’re really excited about here is that we were able to bring aboard a professional on the business side of our operation, a guy who really knows his way around a spreadsheet and understands how to run a business and understands operations. So I want to turn it over to you.

LAMONT BROWNE: Yeah. Thank you, Larry.

I mean, great journalism needs great journalists, and The Sun has that. I’m excited to lead the operation side of the business. Identifying the ideal strategy, business, practices, and approach to make sure that we are able to expand, to grow, to expand our reach across the entire state, to have more customers, readers and dedicated supporters such as you.

And so that’s the work that I’m leading right now. The Sun has had a great team. And if they can grow as much as they have and have the impact that The Sun has had over the last seven years without business infrastructure, you can imagine the optimism we all have for where we can go, with that structure that we’re putting in place.

And so I’ve been pleased to be with the team now for a little over two months. We have a lot of work to do, but we are keeping you at our focus, our readers, the Colorado residents, the partners, and the national people who are supporting what we do. Support and appreciate good journalism, authentic journalism, and, and really just want to see us grow, expand, and maximize our impact. So we cannot thank you enough for your support, and continue to grow as much as we can.

LR: So over these past seven years, we’ve been very fortunate to be able to grow our readership. Again, we started out with zero readers out there, and we’re just thrilled today that we got people not only all across the state, but across the country and frankly, even some overseas. Some of you Coloradans apparently get around.

We’ve got people who care about Colorado, and that’s one of the things that we do here at the Colorado Sun is to try to help people understand what it means not only to live and work in Colorado, but to play in Colorado, and we understand that there are lots of people out there. And by the way, The Colorado Sun, we share our content with dozens of news organizations, across the state.

So on any given day, you might see Colorado Sun stories on front pages. You might hear us on public radio talking about our work. We are proud to partner with friends out there who are reading Colorado Sun stories every day to thousands of blind and vision impaired Coloradans. And we’re just thrilled to have such an impact across our state and across our country.

And thank you again for placing your trust in The Colorado Sun. And your support just means so much to us and to your fellow Coloradans. So, you know, thank you again. It’s been a great seven years. Looking forward to the next seven.
