The Bears are bringing in some kicking competition for Cairo Santos.
According to reporting from NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, kicker Jake Moody has been signed to Chicago’s practice squad just days after being waived by the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners parted ways with Moody after he missed two field goals in the team’s win over Seattle in Week 1.

Cairo Santos had a rough outing on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings. He went 1-for-2 with a missed 50-yarder and a made 42-yarder that just barely snuck inside the goalpost. Also, after the Bears cut the Vikings’ lead to three, he needed to boot the ball through the endzone to save Ben Johnson’s team some precious time, and he was unable to do so, essentially costing the team a chance to tie or win the game late.
Santos had brought some stability to Chicago’s kicking game over the past few seasons. While his leg lacked the distance most NFL kickers possess today, he was always steady from inside 50 yards. That’s started to change a bit, though, and now it appears Ben Johnson and Ryan Poles are willing to look at other options after his accuracy has begun to drop off.

Moody was a third-round draft pick for the 49ers out of Michigan in 2023. At Michigan, he was a two-time first-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten kicker. He won the Lou Groza award as the nation’s top kicker in 2021. It’s rare we see kickers get drafted, especially that early, so he went to San Francisco with very high expectations, but never lived up to them.
As a rookie in 2023, he went 21-for-25 (84%) with a long of 57 yards. Last year, though, his numbers dropped off a cliff, going 24-for-34 (70.6%). Plus, he made the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team in 2023. So there is a pedigree of success that is worth rolling the dice on here. But to start the 2025 season, Moody went 1-for-3 against the Seahawks in Week 1 before 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and company decided to make a change.
The Bears are hoping that a change of scenery will help Jake Moody reclaim the form that made him the best kicker in college football. Moody was a second-team All-American in 2022, consensus All-American in 2021, and a two-time Big Ten Kicker of the Year award winner. Accuracy is something that can be worked on; distance not so much. If Cairo Santos can’t consistently be relied on from 55+ yards, there’s really not much place for him in the league anymore. Five or ten years ago, 50+ yards was a long kick. Now, we see kickers trying regularly from 55+ and making them with ease.
We’ll see how Moody is in practice, but it seems that another tough outing for Santos could spell the end of his time in Chicago.
